The Team
The Patient Experience subdivision (PEX) is focused on our patients; empowering patients to seamlessly manage their health and wellness as active partners with their healthcare team. We are dedicated to transforming how patients interact with healthcare by building innovative software solutions that give patients unprecedented control over their health journey while streamlining workflows for healthcare staff.
What We Build
The Consumer Messaging team within (within PEX) builds and supports athenahealth's patient messaging infrastructure which delivers millions of important messages every day to patients in personalized, multi-channel communication mediums, providing valuable information to patients from their providers and strengthening their relationship. This includes:
Multi-Channel Communication: We create systems that reach patients where they are – text, email, push notifications, and phone calls – ensuring important messages are seen and acted upon. Automated & Tailored Messaging: From appointment reminders to population health notices, our software automates crucial outreach while enabling tailored, patient-specific messaging. Actionable Results: Our solutions are designed to drive patient action, leading to faster payments, timely preventative care, and better health management.
These messages are part of campaigns whose journey can be designed using our campaign manager application. Our technology is implemented with a mix of technologies with most development occurring in Javascript, React, Typescript on the front-end side with NodeJS and Java on the backend, following an AWS microservice-based architecture.

Position Summary
As a developer with relevant experience in backend technologies for API development and microservice architecture, you will be working closely with fellow developers, Leads/Architects, Product Owners, and other technical teams. Your primary responsibility will be to build and maintain the complete software development process from conception to deployment in adherence with the set policies on Security, performance, and testing.
As a team member, you value collaborative environments where you can challenge ideas and learn from your colleagues. Job responsibilities:
Technical Execution
- Produce accurate, unambiguous, and readable code adhering to technical design specifications.
- Deliver customer value in the form of high-quality software components and services in adherence with policies on Security, performance, longevity, and Integration testing.
- Estimate the size of development tasks in story points with the goal of 80% accuracy; begin to challenge others during estimation.
- Write, debug, and deploy code to production; deliver timely fixes.
- Adhere to DOD (story definition of done) as part of the sprint, including unit tests, functional testing, code reviews, no regressions, bug fixes, documentation and adhere to coding, design, and architecture best practices.
- Perform peer code reviews to ensure quality standards.
Contributions to the Team
- Master the domain knowledge for area of assignment.
- Take ownership of what the team builds after the release.
- Volunteer for work in the backlog and commit to quality delivery; Coordinate efforts across the team to ensure completion and effectiveness of one’s deliverables.
- Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e., daily stand-up, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
- Drive self-organization; help determine how the team functions in collaboration with your peers.
- Mentor the team members to maximize overall productivity and effectiveness of the team.
Cross functional Coordination and Communication
- Work collaboratively across the Technology and Product organizations to ensure alignment towards business goals
- Build strong relationships with cross-functional team members
- Share business and technical learnings with the broader engineering and product organization, while adapting approach for different audiences
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of software development experience or 3+ with a master’s degree
- Strong understanding of data structures and OOPs concepts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of modern programming languages such as: Java, Spring, Hibernate, RESTful API.Hands on experience in at least one relational database or NOSQL db.
- Ability and willingness to explore legacy and monolith systems.
- Ability to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to write code that is technically sound, performant, scalable, and readable.
- Availability to occasionally work after-hours on production support issues or collaborate with USA-based colleagues.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related STEM field
- Ability to do technical design for the given product requirements.
- Experience in building, deploying containerized applications on cloud platforms like AWS.
- Experience in an Agile environment.
- Knowledge of microservices architecture, messaging system (RabbitMQ /Kafka), docker.
- Ability to make decisions independently, driving towards the right solution
