We’re looking for an Assistant Controller to join our national finance team and help drive the growth of Charge Solar and the solar industry as a whole. Job Overview:
The Assistant Controller will play a key role helping to lead the finance department and supporting the Controller in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, managing accounting operations, overseeing the company’s credit granting and collection processes, and ensuring compliance with Canadian accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations:
Assist the Controller in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and inventory accounting.
Maintain and update the general ledger, ensuring all financial transactions are accurately recorded and classified.
Support month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments are completed in a timely manner.
Credit Management:
Evaluate and approve/reject credit applications from new and existing customers based on creditworthiness and financial health.
Develop and manage credit control systems, including setting credit limits, payment terms, and follow-up procedures for overdue accounts.
Maintain records of credit agreements, payment plans, and dispute resolutions.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, as well as external regulatory requirements, including tax filings and audits.
Assist in the development and implementation of internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and enhance the efficiency of financial operations.
Support external audits by preparing necessary documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
Team Leadership & Development:
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the team meets its objectives.
Assist in training and development of team members on accounting procedures, systems, and financial policies.
Foster a collaborative and results-driven team environment within the finance department.
System & Process Improvement:
Work closely with the Controller to streamline and improve financial processes, leveraging technology where possible.
Participate in ERP system updates or implementations, ensuring system integrity and efficiency.
Identify opportunities to automate routine tasks to increase productivity and accuracy.
Tax Compliance:
Work with the Controller to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal tax regulations, including sales tax (GST/HST, PST).
Work with the Controller to support the preparation and submission of corporate tax filings in collaboration with external tax advisors.
Qualifications & Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent is required.
Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., ERP systems) and advanced Excel skills.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent leadership and communication abilities, with experience managing or mentoring accounting staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a national or multi-location distribution environment.
Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, or Acumatica.
