Job description:
The position is a specialist in youth detention and helps to provide independent, proactive, preventative and systemic oversight of custodial centres in Tasmania. This position will have a particular focus on monitoring conditions of youth detention, including via regular visits to Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC) in Deloraine, Tasmania and desktop monitoring. They will play a key role in mandatory and occasional inspections and reviews of AYDC under the Custodial Inspector Act 2016 (the Act).

Period of Appointment
Fixed term for two years.
Hours per fortnight
73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available.
Duties
Promote the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable people you may be engaging with (including children and young people) and immediately report any concerns, disclosures, allegations or suspicions of harm. Actively participate in and contribute to practices that will ensure the Office of the Custodial Inspector is a child safe organisation including complying with any reporting, record keeping and information sharing obligations.
Visit AYDC on a regular basis to meet with young people in detention, develop an effective rapport with them, witness their living environment and programs, and provide real time feedback on conditions of detention.
Develop and maintain constructive and effective relationships with detention centre management, staff and other service providers responsible for the wellbeing of young people in detention.
Exercise specialist skills to support the Custodial Inspector to meet the objectives of the Act, including monitoring and reporting on conditions of youth detention.
Co-ordinate, schedule and undertake mandatory and occasional inspections of all custodial centres in accordance with the requirements of the Act, with a focus on AYDC.
Plan and co-ordinate the development of draft inspection reports in accordance with mandated timeframes.
Conduct environmental scanning of youth detention to identify current and future issues, trends and best practice in custodial services, undertake reviews of complex issues and present findings and recommendations to the Principal Inspection Officer.
Undertake research in relation to inspection reports to ensure findings are consistent with best practice.
Essential Requirements
Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Registration Status Employment).
Current Drivers Licence.
