The Radiation Therapy Clinical Educator plans and directs radiation therapist education and supports the Radiation Therapy vision. The Clinical Educator in Radiation Therapy oversees (1) the development of the knowledge, skills, ability, and aptitude of radiation therapy staff and students (2) the enhancement of radiation therapy patient education programs and (3) the promotion of professional and public education regarding Radiation Therapy and Radiation Therapists. Duties/Accountabilities: 1. Collaborates and contributes to clinical education for the Radiation Therapy Program through development of new training and clinical instruction. Recognizes the importance of maintaining clinical expertise, by performing clinical duties in the treatment and/or planning module. 2. Develops, incorporates and evaluates education programs for staff radiation therapists and students in response to process initiatives implemented by the provincial Radiation Therapy Program. 3. Ensures consistent administration of Radiation Therapy education and clinical instruction for staff and students, as well as members of the health care team within the Cancer Centers; in support of the programs, policies and standards of practice that enhance continuity and quality of care for oncology patients. 4. Facilitates radiation therapy staff and students’ clinical learning through co-ordination of clinical learning activities. Provides clinical instruction, assessment of the students’ clinical experience and offers support to staff radiation therapists involved in clinical teaching in accordance with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification requirements. 5. Assists the Provincial Professional Practice & Academic Leader in integrating best practice, research findings and process redesign into new programs, policies and educational programs by reviewing current material, drafting updates and forwarding to leadership for approval. 6. Demonstrates and promotes critical inquiry into the practice of radiation therapy by identifying new learning opportunities for staff and students. 7. Observes staff and students, reviews documentation, and incident reports and ensures that standards of care are followed. Consults with the Provincial Professional Practice and Academic Leader, Regional Professional Practice Leaders or academic institution faculty, where necessary, to initiate follow up action. 8. Provides or facilitates the provision of clinical instruction to radiation therapy staff and students in subject areas such as treatment application, treatment planning and patient assessment. +. Assists the Provincial Professional Practice & Academic Leader and Regional Professional Practice Leader in defining and operationalizing professional standards for the discipline of radiation therapy as technology and processes change. Develops and implements education which integrates didactic and clinical instruction in response to program redesign and advancements in professional practice. 10. Assists the Provincial Professional Practice & Academic Leader and Regional Professional Practice Leader and academic institution faculty in creating a culture that recognizes and responds to student and staff professional practice development through activities such as mentoring, role modeling, coaching, team building, resource identification, networking and empowering teams to enhance clinical expertise. 11. Assesses radiation therapy staff and students' clinical learning experience through direct observation within the RT process. Provides feedback and completes evaluations which enhance the learning experience. Consults with the Provincial Professional Practice and Academic Leader, Regional Process Leaders or academic institution faculty, where necessary, to initiate follow up action. 12. Participates as a member of the Provincial/Regional Professional Practice and Interdisciplinary Practice Committees and Clinical Liaison Committees by providing input and feedback; takes follow-up action as required. 13. Collaborates with BCIT faculty and appropriate BC Cancer staff to develop, maintain and continuously evaluate the student clinical curriculum and implements changes to the clinical programs as recommended by the BCIT Program. 14. Maintains student files and documents required for program accreditation purposes. Regularly exchanges student progress information with other clinical educators, instructors and BCIT faculty including information related to areas such as performance and attendance. 15. Undertakes continuous evaluation of the clinical training program to ensure that course objectives are met in the clinical training program and mediates the concerns of the Radiation Therapists, preceptors or students. 16. Participates in skill development, new staff orientation, performance enhancement and quality management programs for radiation therapy staff, preceptors and students by coordinating learning activities and providing feedback where required. 17. Coordinates relevant clinical experience for students by consulting with Provincial Professional Practice & Academic Leader, Regional Professional Practice Leader, and the BCIT radiation therapy program regarding issues of clinical site capacity. 18. Acts as an advocate for radiation therapists by assessing the impact of process changes on professional practice and recommending practice changes as appropriate to the Provincial Professional Practice & Academic Leader and Regional Professional Practice Leader. 1+. Participates in the advancement of oncology knowledge relevant to radiation therapy and patient care by conducting radiation therapy related research in collaboration with other oncology professionals. 20. Applies approved research findings in clinical practice to support the research culture of the organization using models of knowledge translation. 21. Determines own learning needs and meets them in collaboration with the Provincial Professional Practice Leader and Regional Professional Practice Leader for Radiation Therapy. 22. Performs other related duties as assigned.
