Stats NZ is growing our technical leadership capability to deliver on one of the most ambitious public data modernisation initiatives in the country. |We are recruiting for three senior roles that will collectively guide the architecture, platform, and engineering evolution of our national data infrastructure:

Principal ICT Architect - Data Platform - Lead our enterprise and solution architecture direction and ensure alignment of systems, investments, and strategies across Stats NZ.

Technical Lead - Data Platform - Own the technical vision and evolution of the Azure-native Stats NZ Data Platform, enabling trusted, scalable services for all of government.

Principal Cloud Data Engineer - Drive the design and delivery of data pipelines, analytics environments, and automation that power our integrated, cloud-native data platform.

Principal ICT Architect - Data Platform | Kaikawe Matua o te Hangarau Rorohiko

As Principal ICT Architect, you will:

Develop and maintain Stats NZ's enterprise data platform architecture and integrated system blueprints.
Lead data platform architectural governance, design alignment, and the adoption of emerging technologies.
Provide expert guidance across domains (business, data, applications, security, infrastructure).
Engage with senior leaders, agencies, and stakeholders to co-design future-proof solutions.
You'll need:
Extensive experience leading architecture in large, complex environments.
Deep expertise in modern ICT systems, cloud platforms, integration, and digital transformation.
A strategic mindset, public sector acumen, and commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Shape, Picture
Technical Lead - Data Platform | Kaiārahi Hangarau - Raraunga Rāngai Rorohiko

As Technical Lead, you will:

Lead the design and delivery of our Azure-based Data Platform, including Databricks and Stats data products.
Mentor engineers and drive innovation, scalability, and operational excellence.
Partner with architects, analysts, and data product teams to align platform capabilities with business needs.
Champion best practice in DevOps, CI/CD, observability, and platform governance.
You'll need:
Proven leadership in cloud data platforms (preferably Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Spark).
Hands-on experience with IaC (Terraform), containerisation, and secure integration.
Ability to translate complex architecture into clear, actionable solutions.
Shape, Picture
Principal Cloud Data Engineer | Pūkenga Matua Raraunga Kapua

As Principal Cloud Data Engineer, you will:

Lead the development of robust, automated, and secure data pipelines for streaming and batch workloads.
Design reusable frameworks, libraries, and patterns that enable productivity and reliability at scale.
Uplift engineering practice and work closely with architects, analysts, and governance leads.
Optimise performance, cost-efficiency, and observability of platform workloads.
You'll need:

Deep technical experience with Spark, Delta Lake, and Azure Databricks.
Fluency in modern data engineering languages (Python, SQL), tooling (dbx, MLflow), and patterns.
Strong understanding of metadata, lineage, and data quality practices.
