Position Summary
Unit Heads make a major contribution to the formulation of strategies and objectives in line with the corporate
goals of the institute and take an active role in developing and promoting the institute’s business activity. In
addition to expertise in their professional field, they need advanced leadership skills to fulfil their supervisory
and managerial responsibilities.
Under broad direction from the Group Head, your duties may include:
Provide leadership, direction and performance management to staff in the Unit to ensure achievement of
corporate objectives through the effective management of physical, financial, technological information,
and human resources.
Plan, initiate, and manage major complex projects and functions, or manage the collection and analysis of
data and the preparation of reports, publications, papers, and submissions.
Undertake highly complex research and analysis associated with AIHW projects and the development and
review of AIHW policies and procedures.
Prepare high level reports, publications, papers, and submissions, and professionally review and provide
advice and guidance to authors of such documents.
Provide high level professional, technical, and management subject matter expertise on matters in line
with the AIHW’s corporate and strategic plans.
Undertake high level liaison and negotiation with other areas of the AIHW, other government agencies,
State and Local authorities and business or community organisations, and represent the AIHW at high
level meetings, conferences, and seminars to develop and promote the institute’s business activities.
There are currently several positions available, and specific details relating to the positions are below. This process
will also be used to establish a merit list which may be used to fill similar Unit Head positions at the AIHW over the
next 18 months.
Population Health Group
The Population Health Group has responsibility for monitoring and surveillance of chronic diseases, risk factors
and the health of population groups, and undertaking a wide range of novel and complex analyses and reporting
projects, including using linked data. The group works closely with stakeholders to identify data and analysis
needs, gaps, and options for data development
Three positions are available in the group:
Head, Chronic Conditions Unit
o The Chronic Conditions Unit operates under the National Centre for Monitoring Chronic Conditions
(NCMCC). The NCMCC aims to help reduce the impact of chronic conditions in Australia by informing
Government and community discussion and decision-making.
o The unit is responsible for monitoring chronic conditions and multimorbidity, including assessing the
impact of chronic conditions at critical life stages and for at-risk populations.
o The role involves negotiating and managing the NCMCC workplan and budget, in collaboration with
unit heads across the Population Health Group, as well as leading a wide range of novel and
complex analyses and reporting projects, including several linked data projects.
Head, Cancer and Screening Linkage and Data Development Unit
o The Cancer and Screening Linkage and Data Development Unit is a newly established unit which will
work closely with the Department of Health and Aged Care, Cancer Australia and key external
stakeholders, Cancer Data and Monitoring Unit, Screening and Analysis Monitoring Unit, and other
relevant AIHW units to support data development across the cancer and screening continuum.
o The unit is responsible for development of data linkage infrastructure for cancer and screening data,
including linking relevant cancer and screening data to the national health data hub and the person
level integrated data asset
o The unit also manages AIHW’s responsibilities relating to the new national lung cancer screening
program and the development of a skin cancer screening roadmap.
Head, Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Kidney Unit
o The Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Kidney Unit operates under the National Centre for Monitoring
Chronic Conditions (NCMCC). The NCMCC aims to help reduce the impact of chronic conditions in
Australia by informing Government and community discussion and decision-making.
o The unit is responsible for monitoring and surveillance of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and
chronic kidney disease as well as monitoring and reporting on the health of specific population
groups, including children and youth, males and females, rural and remote and culturally and
linguistically diverse (CALD) populations. The role oversees staff undertaking a wide range of novel
and complex analyses and reporting projects, including using linked data.
o The unit head is responsible for compilation, custodianship and management of the National
(insulin-treated) Diabetes Register (NDR), National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) data, the
Australian and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) and incidence of kidney
failure data.
Selection Criteria
Our ideal candidate will have most or all of the following skills and knowledge:
1. Shapes strategic thinking: This is about your ability to understand the link between the work of the unit, the
institute, whole of government agenda. This is demonstrated by your analytical thinking and sound judgement
to translate strategic objectives to operational goals. You will also need an understanding of the strategic
environment and key stakeholders of the AIHW, including understanding the agendas of relevant non-federal
entities and data suppliers.
2. Achieves results: This is about your commitment to working towards the delivery of outcomes and your ability
to draw on your own and others’ expertise to achieve these goals. It is also about how you deal with and
implement change.
3. Cultivates productive working relationships: This encapsulates teamwork, respect for your colleagues, and
building and nurturing internal and external collaborative working relationships, including with funders, data
suppliers, and users of statistical reports. It also entails developing, supporting, and mentoring staff.
4. Exemplifies personal drive and integrity: This is about pushing yourself to achieve your work goals while
maintaining integrity and confidentiality. It includes providing impartial and forthright advice and facing
challenges constructively.
5. Communicates with influence: This emphasises the importance of excellence in oral and written
communication with all your internal and external stakeholders, colleagues, and clients. It is also about your
ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.
6. Relevant expertise: Relevant expertise includes experience leading high performing teams in the areas of data
analysis, reporting of statistics and information, or the management of a program of work in this area.
Knowledge or expertise in building organisational technical and engagement skills and capacity is highly
desirable.
Relevant tertiary qualifications in public health, health and social statistics, business administration, business
policy, business analysis, or contract management will be highly regarded.
