Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM – 4:15 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This position works in the Electrical Inspection organizational unit. This is electrical inspectional and regulatory work. An employee of this class inspects all types of electrical equipment and installations to ensure that plans, workmanship, materials, methods and safety precautions conform to specification and the requirements of the B.C. Electrical Code, Safety Act and Regulations, and City Electrical Bylaws and policies. Duties involve inspecting installations during construction and upon completion, and providing technical advice to electrical installers, designers and suppliers. Under the general supervision of the Electrical Inspector 2, assignments are received verbally or in the form of the inspection rosters. Incumbents of positions in this class exercise considerable independent judgement in making technical decisions and in interpreting regulations to those concerned. Work performance is reviewed by a supervisor for technical adequacy, consistency and conformance with established practices. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and apprenticeship in electrical work, plus considerable experience as a journeyman electrician. The incumbent will have thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment of the electrical trade, along with knowledge of the B.C. Electrical Code, B.C. Electrical Safety Act and Regulation and the City Electrical Bylaws applicable to electrical installations. Electrical Inspector 1 will have the ability recognize faulty construction of hazardous conditions applicable to electrical installations; understand and interpret building plans and recognize requirements related to electrical installations; ability to work with minimal supervision and to travel to and perform field work on a variety of construction sites. Skill in the use of standard testing devices of the electrical trade and in the detection of faulty wiring and installations. A valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License and B.C. Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician are required. The ability to obtain an Inspector’s Certificate of Qualification as a Safety Officer from the BC Safety Authority is also required.
