Stephens Memorial Hospital is seeking to hire a Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department on a PRN or as needed basis.
Position Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing high standards of nursing care to ill, injured convalescent or disabled patients in the Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical Department, and/or the Ambulatory Care Services Department. The RN works as part of SMH’s healthcare team and is responsible for assessing patient needs, planning and modifying care, and implementing interventions. The RN is assigned to a primary nursing unit, but may be asked to work in any other nursing unit based on the needs of those departments and the patient population and is expected to function according to the Registered Nurse scope in each department.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Organize workflow, respond to emergencies and record details of patient encounters.
Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
Administer medications to patients and monitor patients for reactions or side effects.
Record patients' medical information and vital signs.
Monitor, record, and report to the physician about symptoms or changes in patients' conditions.
Perform nursing procedures and skills based on physician order, assessment, and care plan.
Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans.
Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
Direct or supervise other nurses, patient care technicians, nursing assistants, and/or ancillary healthcare personnel within department based on census, acuity, and the competency and skill level of other staff as directed by the Unit Nursing Director.
Prepare patients for and assist with examinations or treatments.
Instruct patients, families, or other groups on topics such as health education and disease prevention, and develop health improvement programs.
Assess the needs of patient’s, families, or communities, including verbal assessment of individuals' home or work environments, to identify potential health or safety problems.
Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, or supplies and ensure that stock of supplies is maintained.
Refer patients and/or caregivers to specialized health resources or community agencies furnishing assistance.
Inform physician of patient's condition and update with any changes.
Participate in infection control programs, advising or consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.
Recommend drugs, medical devices, or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
Implement orders per physician, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition.
Perform physical examinations and implement interventions based on the findings.
Work with individuals, groups, or families to plan or implement programs designed to improve the overall health of communities.
Care for patients according to the established guidelines of the unit being worked.
Demonstrate competency for skill required in each care setting worked.
Minimum Requirements
Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license with the Texas Board of Nursing.
1-2 years of hospital nursing experience preferred.
Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining Basic Life Support (CPR-Healthcare Provider) certification within 30 days of hire.
Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications within 90 days of hire.
Full-time employee or PRN or Agency employee with primary department of ED is responsible for obtaining and maintaining Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC) certification within 6 months of hire. TNCC is preferred for PRN or Agency employee with other primary department.
Work Environment: The position primarily is located inside a healthcare facility. Occasionally requires work outside in adverse weather conditions. This position is classified as an OSHA category 1 position: routinely exposed to a specific hazard as a regular part of the job.
