Job Description
Bring your editorial talent, creativity and eye for detail to one of New Zealand’s most beloved lifestyle brands. NZ House & Garden is seeking a Deputy Editor who will help shape the next chapter of our print and digital presence, ensuring our content inspires, informs and delights readers across the country.
About the Role
This is an opportunity to play a central part in producing New Zealand’s leading lifestyle brand. Working closely with the Editor, you will help shape monthly issues, special editions and digital features, ensuring every piece is produced to the highest editorial and visual standard.
You will commission, edit and occasionally write standout stories that celebrate Aotearoa’s homes, gardens, design and people. You will also work hand-in-hand with contributors, photographers, designers, homeowners, industry leaders and the wider Stuff team to create cohesive, engaging content for our audiences across print, online and social channels.
A natural storyteller with strong editorial instincts, you’ll uphold the highest standards of accuracy, clarity and creativity. You will also embrace emerging technologies including AI to support efficiency, spark new ideas and help the team focus their energy on exceptional journalism.
What You’ll Do
Edit and commission high-quality features for both print and digital audiences.
Oversee the production and support the planning of monthly issues, Special Editions and calendars.
Build strong relationships with homeowners, industry experts and content contributors to actively source houses and gardens to feature.
Use technology, including AI, to streamline workflows and enhance creative output.
Work closely with the Features Editor, designers, photographers, homeowners, industry leaders and writers to deliver polished, engaging content across platforms.
Contribute ideas that align with NZ House & Garden’s editorial strategy and audience insights.
Maintain a strong focus on factual and grammatical accuracy, quality, tone and brand consistency.
Act as senior editorial support to the Editor, assisting with workflow management and content planning.
Help amplify NZ House & Garden across Stuff’s print, digital and social channels.
Support commercial partnerships, special projects, events and content campaigns where relevant.
Champion emerging technologies, ensuring the team can focus on meaningful, creative storytelling.
You will bring:
Proven experience in journalism, ideally within lifestyle media or magazines.
Excellent editing, sub-editing and writing skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
A strong instinct for compelling stories
Experience working with freelance contributors and diverse communities.
Familiarity with emerging technologies, including AI, to support editorial workflows.
An interest in or working knowledge of InDesign.
A steady hand under deadlines and an organised approach to production cycles.
Curiosity, creativity and a genuine passion for homes, design, gardens, culture and food.
A collaborative attitude and enthusiasm for continuous learning.
