The Senior Manager – Technical Services plays a pivotal leadership role within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary Faculty environment, where strategic vision and operational excellence go hand in hand. This position oversees the full spectrum of technical service delivery, providing sound judgment to balance long-term planning with the immediacy of day-to-day operational demands. Leading school-based technical teams while fostering cohesion and collaboration across the faculty, the role contributes to high-level planning that shapes technical investment, infrastructure, and capability development.

This is an exciting opportunity to step into a senior leadership role at the heart of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary Faculty, where technical services are critical to teaching, research, and innovation. As Senior Manager – Technical Services, you will shape the strategic direction of technical capability and infrastructure while ensuring the seamless day-to-day delivery of services across multiple schools and campus locations.. The role offers the chance to influence technical investment and long-term planning, lead and develop high-performing teams, and drive cohesion across diverse operational areas.
You will operate in a complex and evolving environment, managing people, budgets, safety, and physical spaces while balancing competing priorities with sound judgement and clarity of purpose. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced technical leader who thrives on both strategic engagement and operational oversight, can adapt their communication style across audiences, and is motivated to lead through change, ensuring continuity, fostering collaboration, and strengthening technical services as a cornerstone of Faculty success.

Experienced technical services leader with a strong background in managing multidisciplinary technical teams within complex operational and education-based environments.
Committed to upholding and enacting Te Tiriti o Waitangi, fostering partnership, participation, and protection in leadership practice.
Strong people management capability — providing clear direction, performance oversight, coaching, and pastoral support to enable teams to perform at their best.
Able to see the bigger organisational picture, understanding how technical services underpin operational and academic success across campus.
Proven knowledge of health and safety and compliance requirements, including supporting outdoor activities, laboratories, technical operations, and regulated environments, with a focus on proactive risk management and embedding a strong safety culture.
Experienced in managing technicians and technical support staff across diverse service areas, including science and technical support functions, estates collaboration, and sports/activity-based operations.
Work closely with estates teams, operational professionals, and senior leaders to ensure seamless service delivery and coordinated campus support.
Confident in escalating issues appropriately, advocating for staff, and ensuring timely and constructive resolution of operational challenges.
Experience working within research and/ or education settings, with an understanding of compliance, accountability, and professional standards.
Comfortable reporting to a Director of Operations and operating at both strategic and operational levels.
Experienced in supporting organisations through change, with a focus on stability, team building, and establishing a clear identity and purpose for newly developed teams.
Skilled at managing multiple technical teams across campus, aligning them to shared goals while maintaining service excellence.
Strong organisational capability, sound judgement, and the ability to balance operational detail with long-term service improvement.
A collaborative leadership style, with a commitment to AUT’s values of Tika, Pono, and Aroha – integrity, respect, and compassion and continuous improvement.
