The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is seeking to hire two Student Assistants to assist, in a learning capacity, under close supervision, the Chief and The Office of Building Information Modeling for Infrastructure (BIM4I) Delivery and Guidance, in tasks related to implementing BIM4I into Caltrans workflows. BIM4I involves three-dimension (3D) model-based digital information to improve collaboration, quality, efficiency, and safety throughout the stages of planning, design, construction, maintenance, operations, and asset life-cycle management.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Punctual and reliable attendance is required.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
Attention to detail and reliable.
Must possess good organizational and communication skills.
Must possess good analytical abilities.
Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Professional and Microsoft Teams.
Ability to operate various office machines, such as Personal Computers (PC’s), copiers, document scanners, and printers.
Official transcripts of all prior college coursework must be provided prior to employment. Only the most qualified applicants will be interviewed.
Preferred Qualifications
Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Experience with database software, accurate and reliable data entry.
Familiarity with Adobe eSign.
Ability to use advanced Excel and Word functions.
Ability to create charts and graphs that are easily understandable.
Ability to learn and understand new workflow processes.
Willingness to learn new software and skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in developing Building Information Modeling for Infrastructure (BIM4I) procedures, manuals, specifications, and other documents. Collaborate with other engineering and divisional staff to gather and incorporate input. Circulate documents for review; prepare, coordinate, and track comment resolution; and distribute response to comments.
In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will collect, monitor, track, and report on status, lessons learned, and efficiencies of BIM4I pilot projects.
In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist is in developing educational materials such as brochures and training to disseminate information both internally and externally. External partners include construction contractors, permitting agencies, and local agencies.
In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will attend, organize, and facilitate meetings as needed for assigned duties and staff meetings.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Climbing stairs, lifting/carrying/moving objects (i.e. files, books, binders, etc.); walking on uneven surfaces, up/down slopes, and adjacent to traffic with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment with potential accompanied visits to the fieldwork site.
