We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the Office of Fair Work Ombudsman (OFWO) as an Evidence Management Officer in the Evidence Management Team within the Criminal Investigations Branch. This is a new team, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the culture and work practices of the area. The position is available at an APS level 5. Full-time and part-time hours and hybrid work arrangements are available. Offers will be based on candidate performance and operational requirements.

A merit list may also be formed as a result of this exercise and may be used to fill similar vacancies in the next 18 months.

The successful candidate must hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance (AGSVA) or be willing to undergo and obtain a Baseline security clearance (we will support you through this process)

About the Team

The Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) is being established in response to the Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Act 2023, which introduces a criminal offence for employers intentionally failing to pay employee entitlements. The OFWO will be responsible for investigating contraventions of the offence and referring matters to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) or the Australian Federal Police. The CIB will be responsible for establishing the systems, processes, capabilities and policies required to effectively operate as a dual civil and criminal regulator.

The Evidence Management Team within the CIB will be responsible for overseeing the proper collection, documentation, and preservation of evidence throughout the investigation of matters to a criminal standard of proof through to delivery of briefs of evidence and support during prosecutions.

This is a high-profile area with interest from the Australian public and stakeholder groups within and external to the OFWO. You’ll need to be comfortable working in an environment with a high level of scrutiny.

Typical Duties

Reporting to the Senior Evidence Management Officer, you will be responsible for duties including (however, not limited to):

undertaking general evidence processing tasks, including handling and storage of physical and digital evidence
management of OFWO’s physical evidence room and auditing of exhibit registers in compliance with legal obligations and the Australian Government Investigations Standards
using a range of electronic discovery and electronic document management software to receive, manage, analyse and export evidentiary material
assisting with the preparation, compilation and production of documents to support briefs of evidence for the CDPP
providing advice, support and assistance to the Evidence Management Team and the Criminal Investigations Team in relation to specific evidence requirements.
Interstate and overnight travel may be required in this role.

Your workload should be generally manageable within your standard hours, however on occasion you may be required to work or be contactable outside of your regular working hours.

Selection Criteria

To be successful in the role you will possess:

experience in evidence collection and management and/or regulatory investigations
proficiency in using evidence management software and/or other relevant technology, such as case management software
strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
an ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders to achieve outcomes and produce effective strategies and solutions
excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in documentation and reporting
understanding of, or willingness to learn, the legal and regulatory requirements related to evidence management
demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, apply lateral thinking and identify risks.
