Position Overview

The North Vancouver City Fire Department has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-time Fire Inspector to work in the Fire Prevention Division.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Captain – Fire Prevention and Public Education, you will participate in a program of regular inspections of all types of public and private buildings and structures to ensure compliance with fire prevention regulations; conduct or participate in training and educational workshops or presentations on fire prevention and carry out unscheduled inspections in response to complaints. In addition, you will assist in investigating fires to determine cause and origin, at times outside of normal hours of work due to emergency callouts.
Requirements
You will possess knowledge of building construction, electrical and sprinkler systems; fire prevention inspection, fire investigation and enforcement methods and other by-laws, codes, regulations, and acts governing fire prevention. Experience in fire prevention, fire suppression or building inspections, as well as technical courses related to the work, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. Preference will be given to those with completion of: Fire Prevention Officer Certificate from the Justice Institute (or equivalent), BC Fire Code, BC Building Code: Part 3, Fire Investigator 1, Fire Inspector 1 and Life Safety Educator 1, and other courses relating to fire protection. We may also consider candidates with experience in the trades or a related safety field.
Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. You should also be community-minded, positive and energetic. Strong written communication skills and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office are required, together with a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. You must be medically fit for the position of Fire Inspector and have no criminal convictions relating to the job of Fire Inspector. Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete standardized tests or exercises to demonstrate their applicable skills and knowledge, including their medical fitness.
There is a living boundaries requirement as outlined in the collective agreement between the City and the IAFF Local 2+6.
Compensation
$6,84+ – $10,371 per month*
(January 2024 rates)
further promotional opportunities available based on courses and time within the Fire Prevention Office.
Hours of Work
The Fire Prevention office currently works a 35 hour work week with a compressed schedule. Irregular evening and weekend work may be required.
