The Role
Performs preventive maintenance, repair service, and emergency repairs to Regional vehicles/trucks and equipment, including safety inspections, analysis, and diagnosis of vehicle and equipment components and systems, as well as welding and fabrication of specialty items and equipment.
Duties/Responsibilities
Performs work received from Lead Hand, Fleet Technician (Light), supervisor, and Fleet Services Coordinator. Performs repairs and inspections of vehicles/trucks and equipment, as required. Uses test equipment to diagnose causes of equipment breakdown or inefficiency, including problems with electrical, transmission, engine, clutch. Advises Lead Hand/supervisor of delays and resolves problems where possible.
Identifies defects requiring repair, confirms if still under warranty, and forwards warranty claims information to the Lead Hand/supervisor.
Performs annual or semi-annual safety inspections for vehicles/trucks and equipment, per Ministry of Transportation requirements. Reports status to Lead Hand/supervisor and makes recommendations. Completes and signs inspection documentation.
Performs safety inspections for used vehicle sale/purchases, per Ministry of Transportation requirements. Completes inspection documentation and signs inspection documentation.
Performs repairs, using hand and power tools, to light equipment (e.g., motorcycles, utility trailers), vehicles (e.g., cars, vans, pick-ups), and trucks (e.g., dual wheel ambulances, bomb truck, band van).
Performs repair services to vehicles/trucks and equipment as scheduled. Advises Lead Hand/supervisor of problems, and provides suggestions for safe operation of the vehicle/equipment based on current condition.
Performs preventive/predictive maintenance as per schedule and Section guidelines, including mandatory/legislated, pre/post winter, and pre/post-season inspections.
Performs welding of broken equipment pieces as required and fabrication of new equipment pieces for Regional fleet or shop, including platforms, cages, equipment covers, and framework.
Participates in legislatively required training and/or regular on-going training regarding new vehicle technology and automotive diagnostic equipment, as required.
Performs duties such as shop clean up, vehicle/equipment cleaning, shop equipment repairs, work area setup, and other related duties as assigned.
Provides backup for other positions in the Section.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the repair, maintenance and operation of light vehicles/trucks and equipment, related electronic control devices, fuel systems, brake systems, tires, suspension, alignment, emissions, and air conditioning systems, acquired through a Grade 12 education; Journeyperson status as an Automotive Service Technician (310S); and 4 years of experience working on light vehicles/trucks and equipment as an Automotive Service Technician with Journeyperson status.
Knowledge of and ability to comply with corporate policies, procedures, trade standards, and related legislation and guidelines (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation).
Ability to road test light vehicles/trucks and equipment; perform roadside repairs; lift equipment and parts weighing between 25 and 65 Kgs, and push and/or pull objects weighing a maximum of 200 Kgs to perform repairs and service.
Analytical and problem solving skills to assist in the resolution of complex mechanical problems.
Communication skills to provide maintenance instructions to operators; obtain information from sources to perform diagnoses; and participate as an effective team member.
Ability to scan time into the Fleet Management System, create work orders, complete time sheets, and complete repair summaries and inspection documentation.
Computer skills with ability to create/access data in the Fleet Management System; operate automotive computer diagnostic equipment.
Ability to supply own full complement of good quality and safe mechanics' hand tools.
Must have a valid class G driver’s license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate Regional vehicles/trucks and equipment.
Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
