Job Description

THE MUSEUM’S MISSON

The Britannia Mine Museum is a self-sustaining, non-profit organization, that creates accessible learning experiences to inspire discovery and connection through guided interpretive programming, self-exploration opportunities, and the preservation of our historical site and artifacts.

The Museum is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Sk̲wx̲wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.

THE ROLE…

The Graphic Designer (temporary) is part of the Museum Sales and Marketing team and is responsible for creating , preparing and delivering visual assets for the Museum’s marketing campaigns, site signage, guest wayfinding, events and exhibits. This role works with various departments and Museum Teams to help them fulfill their design requirements and manages the production schedule.

This is a temporary contract role essential to maintaining brand continuity and awareness that supports the Museum’s mission, vision and strategic goals.

Your overall competency in: graphic design , layout , creative services, customer focus, creativity and desktop publishing has lead to compelling and visually stunning outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Exhibit Design Support

Prepare exhibit or design materials by gathering information and materials.

Create visually compelling, highly readable (often from a distance) all the 2D visual elements within an exhibit space.(often from a distance) and perfectly integrated with the 3D

Plan exhibit concept in consultation with the Museum’s Curator and by studying available information and materials including previous exhibits.

2) Wayfinding and Signage Systems

Support the development of comprehensive wayfinding systems that guide visitors seamlessly from the Museum’s entrance to the site, tunnel, exhibits, restrooms, cafe, retail and exits.

3) Marketing & Communications

Create a wide array of promotional materials to spread the word about exhibits, events, educational programs and fundraising.

Capture the attention, convey key information succinctly, and entice potential visitors to cross the threshold of Britannia Mine Museum.

Create print advertisements, digital banners for websites and social media, brochures, flyers, email templates, and even out-of-home advertising like bus shelter posters and bus wrapping.

Obtain approval of concept by submitting rough layout for approval to the related managers/ senior leadership or board of directors.

4) Museum branding and visual guide .

Maintain and augment the Museum’s distinct brand guide

Complete projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services,

printers, etc.

5) Digital Media, Interactive Experiences & Educational Program Materials:

Create graphics for the Museum’s website, social media, interactive kiosks, touchscreen displays as requested

Work with the Museum Program and Guest Experience Department to understand their unique needs.

Support other relevant production of graphic design materials on request.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Strong portfolio demonstrating skills in typography, colour theory and industry software.

Able to Illustrate concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts.

Adobe Creative Suite (InSuite, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)

DesCan (Society of Graphic Designers of Canada) CDP

Microsoft 365

Digital illustrations, photo enhancement, print productions, web/interactive media equipment; purchasing from vendors when required.

Maintain technical knowledge by attending design workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in professional societies.

Flexible, pay attention to detail, deadline-oriented,

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Background :

Graduate of a post-secondary diploma or degree program in graphic design, commercial art, visual arts, graphic communications
Experience:

2+ years of experience working in graphic design environments
Excellent graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Illustrator or similar)
Experience with Meta Business Suite or similar.
Understanding of general marketing principles, including campaign planning, branding, and digital marketing strategies.
Understanding of inclusive, ethical, and accessible communications.
Previous work in the tourism sector, arts & culture sector or non- profit sector is considered and asset.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The Museum offers free parking and staff discounts on food and merchandise

Reliable transportation to and from the work site is required, as public transit is not available to Britannia Beach.IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

To be eligible to work in Canada, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada or authorized in writing to work in Canada under the federal Immigration Act. Eligibility to work in Canada is granted through citizenship, permanent resident status or refugee status.
