Reporting to the Manager, Health Information & Decision Support, the Health Records Technician will input accurate data into the 3M Abstraction System, as well as various databases, and perform electronic qualitative and quantitative analyses of charts following departmental policies and procedures.

JOB FUNCTIONS
Adhere to policies and procedures established for the assigned department while supporting the Mission, Vision and Values of Erie Shores HealthCare
Maintain the confidentiality of all patient information
Code final diagnoses and operative procedures of patient charts using online applications and an electronic health record
Abstract data from charts for submission to Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in accordance with national standards
Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses of charts in an electronic format
Compile workload measurement system statistics and conduct audits as required
Attend appropriate in-service and continuing education programs and participate in the orientation of new employees
Work in conjunction with the Hospital’s Continuous Quality Initiatives and assist with identifying opportunities for improvement
Perform any other relevant duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an approved post-secondary program in Health Information Management
Maintain current registration in good standing with the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIMA) including completion of required Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits
Experience with 3M software system/other related abstracting system an asset
ICD-10/CCI trained in National Ambulatory Care Reporting System metadata (NACRS) and Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) coding, demonstrated skill in Folio (ICD-10-CA, CCI) and Abstracting software (3M)
Knowledge and experience with CIHI reporting structure, Management Information System Standards (MIS) guidelines, Case Mix Groups (CMG), Health Based Allocation Model Inpatient Group (HIG), and Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS)
Possess working knowledge of Public Hospitals Act Regulations relating to Health Records
Intermediate skill levels with computer programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), and Internet (CIHI online query, Postal Code Lookup)
Demonstrate ability to prioritize work and make decisions, and to perform reliably and efficiently to meet ministry deadlines for submissions
Able to make responsible judgments in analyses of charts, including coding optimization
Able to deal with situations in a calm and professional manner
Ability to work remotely with minimal supervision
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
