About the Role

As a Clinical Coder, Mortality you will produce high quality national coded clinical data on causes of death. You will analyse, abstract and classify medical information about diseases, injuries, accidents and other health issues on certificates of cause of death, postmortem reports and coroners' findings to identify and code (in ICD-10/ICD-10-AM) the underlying cause of death in accordance with complex World Health Organization mortality coding standards and guidelines. You will use sound judgement to understand when it is appropriate to reference additional data sources to improve the accuracy of the coded data.

The data you create will be used to produce mortality statistics for analysis, health research, monitoring and evaluation of health services, and national and international reporting.

About the Team/Service

The Planning, Funding and Outcomes (PFO) group has shared accountability for improving health outcomes for all New Zealanders by using evidence, data insights and clinical advice to plan, fund, monitor and improve nationwide health services. The Mortality team has a team leader, 6 clinical coders and 2 data administrators. It sits within the wider team of Foundation Collections and Classification (FC&C) that also includes the NZ Cancer Registry and Private Hospitals coding teams and a senior analyst, classification, FC&C is one of four teams in the National Collections Group within Data and Analytics, PFO.

About you

You will have experience abstracting and analysing relevant clinical information from medical documentation and in ensuring data is complete and accurate. You communicate well and enjoy working and collaborating in a team environment.

You will have:

Tertiary qualification or a clinical/medical background, and/or several years' experience in clinical coding in the health sector
Broad knowledge of anatomy, physiology, diseases and disease progression
The ability to quickly learn how to use bespoke technical data capture systems
Excellent organisational skills, methodical work practices, problem solving skills and high attention to detail
The ability to meet deadlines whilst preserving high levels of accuracy and confidentiality
Prior knowledge/experience using the ICD-10 or ICD-10-AM classification would be an advantage but is not essential.
