LIGHT GOODS VEHICLE MECHANIC APPRENTICE

Company: Clayton Brook Garage

Location: Preston

Wage: Hourly Rate: Min. £7.55 depending on age/experience

Ref: Clayton Brook Garage

As an Apprentice Light Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Mechanic, you will work alongside experienced technicians to learn how to inspect, service, and repair a wide range of light motor vehicles. This hands-on role combines practical workshop experience with structured training, leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Key Responsibilities
• Assist in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical faults in light vehicles.
• Carry out routine vehicle servicing and maintenance under supervision.
• Learn to use diagnostic equipment and tools safely and effectively.
• Maintain accurate records of work completed and parts used.
• Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
• Keep the workshop clean, organised, and compliant with safety standards.
• Attend off-the-job training sessions as part of the apprenticeship programme.
• Work collaboratively with team members and contribute to a positive working environment.

DUTIES

You Will Learn
• Vehicle systems including engines, brakes, suspension, steering, and electrics.
• Fault diagnosis and repair techniques.
• Use of specialist tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Customer service and communication skills.
• Industry regulations and safety standards.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate will have:
• A genuine interest in motor vehicles and mechanics.
• Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
• Basic understanding of maths, English, and science (GCSEs or equivalent preferred).
• Reliable, punctual, and a strong team player.
• Commitment to completing the full apprenticeship programme.

Desirable Skills, But Not Essential
• Previous work experience or studies in a related field (e.g., motor vehicle studies).
• A full UK driving licence or working towards obtaining one (age permitting).

Required Qualifications

GCSE maths and English grade 4 of above (or equivalent, i.e. level 2 functional skills)

Please note: Adults age 19+ are no longer required to evidence maths and English qualifications, however it is still desirable.
