This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on designer or engineer to join the Plasticity Lab, a world-leading neuroscience research team investigating how we can use technology to increase hand functionality in able and disabled individuals of all ages. Working closely with Dani Clode - the Lab’s Senior Technical Specialist and the creator of the Third Thumb, the post holder will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining a range of cutting-edge experimental devices - including wearable robotic augmentation systems, vibrotactile feedback tools, and MRI-compatible equipment.
This role blends creative design with technical precision, contributing directly to innovative research at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and human augmentation. Ideal for someone with experience in 3D modelling, prototyping, and mechanical assembly and an enthusiasm for working with and understanding the human body. This position offers the chance to be part of a dynamic, cross-disciplinary team pushing the boundaries of human capability. Start date is flexible, ideally around August/Sep 2026.

Key responsibilities:
• Assist in the design, development, prototyping, and refinement of bespoke experimental hardware, including the Third Thumb and related augmentation and robotic systems, as well as MRI-compatible and feedback devices used in human augmentation research.
• Support the Senior Technical Specialist in the day-to-day technical and administrative operations of the Plasticity Lab, ensuring smooth execution of engineering tasks and efficient lab function.
• Provide engineering input and technical advice to lab researchers and students on the design and development of experimental hardware and components, considering research outcomes, performance, feasibility, timelines, and budget constraints.
• Fabricate and assemble parts using 3D printing and workshop tools.
• Assist with experimental data collection.
• Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of lab infrastructure, including equipment troubleshooting and repair.
• Contribute to the induction, training, and supervision of new staff, researchers, and students, offering ongoing guidance on technical hardware, for example Third Thumb protocols.
• Actively participate in knowledge exchange activities such as lab meetings, public demonstrations, journal clubs, and exhibitions, supporting the lab’s outreach and collaborative efforts.
• Collaborate with the departmental safety officer to implement and enforce health and safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, and uphold all relevant regulations.
• Manage lab supplies, including monitoring stock levels of materials and consumables, sourcing suppliers, placing orders, and processing related documentation within allocated budgets

Pay: £30,805.00-£35,116.00 per year
