Position Description:
New Woodworking instructors will join a small team of part-time woodworking instructors teaching a variety of beginning woodworking classes under the guidance of Deirdre Visser, Randall Museum’s Curator of Applied Technologies.
We are specifically looking to add two new woodworking instructors to lead up to eight students in two weekly Open Shop settings through the fall. Students have all completed the two introductory courses in the Randall series in which they built a Shaker bench and table. They have also demonstrated safe use of basic shop tools, both power and hand, but bring a wide range of skills and experience. Open Shop is an opportunity for these woodworkers to pursue their own projects with moderate to close supervision. The Instructor will approve projects, ensure safe use of tools, and help students build upon their foundational technical skills as well as their material problem solving skills.
There are two Open Studio sessions weekly for Fall 2026: Tuesdays 9:30AM–1:30PM and Saturdays 1:00-5:00PM. Instructor hours include one hour of prep time for each workshop session. Students enroll in one of those two sessions each week and may enroll in consecutive sessions to complete their projects.
Open Studio Class Key Responsibilities:
Meet with each student individually to plan a project that considers scale, materials, and technical demand appropriate to the student's level of experience.
Supervise up to eight students in each Open Studio class session.
Promote a safe learning environment, with paramount attention to the safe use of tools.
Foster a shop culture of mutual respect.
Support student learning in power and hand tool use.
Solidify students’ understanding of the material characteristics of wood.
Required Skills, Abilities, & Experience:
Ability to work in-person and on-site at the Randall Museum Woodshop.
High level of woodworking experience in furniture design and construction.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum 2-years of experience in teaching woodcraft to Adv Beginner and Intermediate students.
Skilled in verbal communication in a learning environment.
Skilled in cultural competency, with experience working in a diverse community with a commitment to social justice, equity, inclusion, & anti-racism.
Preferred Other Qualifications:
Ability to work independently on tasks and take initiative to foster a dynamic and supportive shop environment.
Bilingual in Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish

Randall Museum Friends is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support the Randall Museum, owned by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, by providing strategic private-sector leadership, fundraising, administration, and volunteer coordination for museum programs. Following completion of robust renovations in 2017, the Randall Museum features a STEM lab with state-of-the-art technological tools; a fully equipped woodworking studio; a natural sciences lab; art and ceramic studios; a toddler playroom; and permanent exhibits exploring ocean ecology, geology, and railroads, along with an extensive working model railroad. Dynamic habitat-based live animal enclosures house more than 100 creatures that can no longer survive in the wild, allowing museum visitors to interact with and learn about California’s diverse wildlife. Outdoor areas feature an observation deck, a small amphitheater, a kinetic wind sculpture, native plant gardens, a water catchment system, picnic spots, and easy access to hillside hiking trails in Corona Heights.
