At Environment Southland, we work alongside our community to manage Southland's land, water, air, and coast, from Stewart Island to Fiordland. After a recent organisational redesign, we're investing in specialist roles that will help us respond to the unique challenges of our region. We're now looking for an experienced Principal Scientist Freshwater to join our high-performing Science Integration Team

About the role:

The Principal Scientist Freshwater contributes to the overall performance of the Science Integration Team by leading and supporting cutting-edge research, analysis and consulting projects in the field of freshwater systems, biodiversity, water quality and ecosystem services.

This role focuses on:

As a senior expert in the organisation, you will be responsible for managing and contributing to complex freshwater studies, mentoring scientists and technicians, and providing strategic leadership for water-related projects.
You will be expected to apply advanced modelling and analysis to address critical freshwater challenges, working with cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
What you'll bring:

A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field.
A minimum 10 years' experience in freshwater ecosystem research, modelling and resource management.
Demonstrated expertise in advanced statistical analysis and modelling tools.
Advanced proficiency in data collection methods, data management software, and GIS.
Proven track record of leadership in science projects, including working with multidisciplinary teams.
Experience working with stakeholders, community groups and iwi.
A high level of experience with project management, budgeting and resource allocation.
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, water policy and climate change impacts on water systems.
Experience in conveying complex technical information to diverse audiences.

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $116,910 - $123,405
