The Children’s Short Stay Unit (CSSU) provides care for up to 32 paediatric patients in an inpatient environment. The unit has 28 isolation rooms and 2 double rooms. Patients admitted to CSSU will usually have a length of stay of up to 72hrs before discharge home or transfer to a long stay ward. Patients are admitted under a medical model of care and are predominantly transferred directly from the Emergency Department for inpatient care.
The patient cohort largely consists of respiratory presentations such as bronchiolitis, asthma, pneumonia & COVID, as well as common childhood illnesses such as fever, poor feeding, UTIs, gastroenteritis, meningitis and seizures. With such a widely varied caseload, CSSU can offer vast opportunities to advance your skills in Paediatric Nursing.
