Job Description

Reporting to the General Counsel and working alongside the Legal and Support Services Teams, the Legal Counsel will provide legal advice regarding education, labour/employment law, human rights, collective bargaining, administrative, privacy, contract and regulatory/professional discipline law. The position is responsible for representing and advising the organization as well as CPCO's Members and Associates on a range of legal matters pertaining to labour, employment, and education law. Matters will include: workplace issues including workplace health and safety, workplace investigations, accommodations, and discipline, labour grievances and arbitrations, collective bargaining support, professional regulation and discipline matters at the Ontario College of Teachers, researching and analyzing new legislation. and managing legal proceedings.

Requirements:

L.L.B./J.D. and member in good standing with LSO
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in employee-sided labour and employment law
Advanced knowledge of labour/employment, human rights, collective bargaining, administrative, privacy, contract, and regulatory/professional discipline law
Litigation, labour arbitration, and labour negotiation experience
Advanced knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, Arbitration Act, Employment Standards Act, 2000, and Labour Relations Act
Assets:

Experience in the area of professional regulation and discipline
Experience in education law
Familiarity with the Education Act, Ontario College of Teachers Act, 1996 and School Board Collective Bargaining Act, 2014
Skills and Abilities:

Excellent leadership and management skills
Excellent interpersonal, communication (written & verbal), analytical, and problem-solving skills
Strong advocacy, negotiation, and dispute resolution skills
Ability to create and present professional learning programs
Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
Work Environment:

Primary work location at the CPCO office, Etobicoke, ON
Hybrid work arrangements with ability to work from home up to 2 days per week, subject to operational needs
Regular office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend work as required
Able to travel occasionally as required.
Salary Range: $145,000 - $175,000 with robust benefit package

Generous paid time off including lieu days, time off over the December holiday period, and 5 weeks of annual vacation
