He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role


As the Upper South Island Asset Engineer, you'll lead a team of Field Asset Engineers and inspectors to support the reliability and safety of KiwiRail’s network by managing infrastructure assets across their lifecycle. From maintenance planning to performance monitoring and technical advice, you'll ensure our assets are fit for purpose and compliant with national standards. Your work will help minimise risk and maximise service delivery, making rail safer and more resilient for everyone.

Working closely with regional teams and national specialists, you'll be part of a collaborative environment where data, insights, and proactive engineering make a real difference.

We’re looking for someone who is proactive, analytical, and passionate about engineering and asset performance. You will bring:

A tertiary qualification in engineering (preferably civil, structural, or related discipline)
Experience in asset management, infrastructure, or project engineering
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Effective communication skills and a collaborative approach
Understanding of health, safety, and environmental requirements
Familiarity with asset data systems (e.g., SAP, Maximo) is desirable
