Atmospheric Technician - NIWA

Earth Sciences NZ is seeking an enthusiastic and competent technician to join our AtmosphericEmissions group to contribute to Earth Sciences NZ’s greenhouse gas measurements programme.This position provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team involved in crucialatmospheric measurement and research activities.


This position sits within the NIWA business unit of Earth Sciences New Zealand, and is locatedat Greta Point, Wellington.

Key responsibilities include:
Supporting the long running observations of greenhouse gases, isotopes, and related gas
tracers from our observation network nationwide.
Conduct laboratory-based trace gas analyses and employ in-situ instruments to contribute to
long term monitoring and research projects on local to national greenhouse gas fluxes
Working in the field collecting and measuring greenhouse gases with the opportunity to
participate in other atmospheric measurement projects.

You will have the opportunity to work in a team with a strong international reputation for high-quality
observations and leading research. Your work will span the complete measurements process from
sample collection or instrument installation including meteorological stations, field work, sample
preparation, analyses, and data management. The applied techniques include gas chromatography
and laser spectroscopy, among other methods. You will generate the observational data that inform
studies of greenhouse gas fluxes and atmospheric processes at national and global scales.


About you
You’ll bring the following:
a tertiary degree in a relevant scientific field or equivalent experience,
expertise in analytical methods, preferably on gas measurements,
experience with general laboratory procedures and workflows,
proven ability to work in a team environment and develop positive working relationships,
be adaptable, focused, well-organised and solution oriented,
knowledge of meteorological instruments or isotope techniques would be of advantage
for aspects of this position but is not a requirement for the role,
a positive work attitude and be self-motivated to get involved with many projects across
the team.
