What is the role?
We are looking for a Marine Maintenance Technician to join our engineering team, supporting both our vessels and our shore-based workshop. This is a practical, hands-on role focused on maintaining reliability across the fleet through planned maintenance, repairs, fabrication work, and technical support.

You will join a strong team of experienced engineers and technicians where teamwork, safety, and practical problem solving are part of everyday work. The role is designed to provide variety, development opportunities, and long-term career growth within StraitNZ and Bluebridge.

This is a permanent salaried position working a continuous roster of 6 days on, 3 days off. The roster consists of:

3 days workshop duty – Kings Wharf (8-hour days)
3 days rostered off

The home port is based in Wellington, where you will need to arrange getting to and from.

You will be:

Carrying out routine maintenance in accordance with the planned maintenance system
Supporting Chief Engineers, Engineering Officers, and workshop teams with repairs and improvements
Undertaking mechanical fitting, fabrication, welding, and workshop preparation tasks
Assisting with fault finding, breakdown response, and defect rectification onboard
Preparing components, assemblies, and spares for installation
Maintaining safe work practices and contributing to a strong safety culture
Supporting winter layovers and major maintenance periods

What are we looking for?

Trade qualification as fitter, mechanic, or similar industrial background
Experience in marine, heavy industry, transport, or workshop environments
Strong mechanical maintenance and fabrication skills
Ability to read technical drawings and follow maintenance procedures
A practical, proactive approach with strong teamwork skills
Experience on passenger or ro-ro vessels is an advantage but not essential
Knowledge of hydraulic systems, automation, and auxiliary machinery is desirable

Candidate must haves:

Have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa to be considered for this role
Be able to satisfy a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, medical assessment, and MOJ check
Be willing to work a structured rotational roster across both vessel and workshop environments

What we offer:

A competitive salary
A structured roster providing balance and variety
Opportunity to work across both shipboard and workshop environments
Long-term career opportunities within a New Zealand-owned transport group

If this role sounds like the right fit and you are looking to join a practical, supportive, and forward-thinking engineering team, then we would like to hear from you. Please
