About the role
As Head of Brand & Marketing, you will play a central role in shaping how Thorntons presents itself to clients, the market and our people. This is a senior leadership position responsible for defining and evolving the firm’s brand—ensuring that how we look, sound and communicate reflects our ambition, values and market position.
Working closely with the Chief Marketing Officer and senior colleagues across Growth & Business Development and Communications, you will translate firm strategy into compelling brand narratives, integrated campaigns and impactful client experiences. Leading the Brand & Marketing function, including the Studio team and Sponsorship & Events, you will drive consistent, high-quality creative output that strengthens our reputation, supports growth priorities and reinforces Thorntons’ competitive advantage.
Your leadership will ensure our brand is distinctive, commercially aligned and consistently expressed across every touchpoint—from campaigns and thought leadership to pitches, events and digital channels.
About the team
You will be joining a collaborative and forward-thinking Marketing & Communications team at an exciting point in the firm’s growth. With strong leadership support for brand development and marketing innovation, this role offers the opportunity to shape how Thorntons is perceived across Scotland and beyond.
You will lead the Brand & Marketing function, including two Senior Designers and the Events & Sponsorship Co-ordinator, working closely with colleagues across Growth & Business Development, Communications, Digital Marketing and the wider business services teams.
It’s about:
Brand Strategy & Market Positioning
• Defining and evolving the firm’s brand strategy, positioning and visual identity.
• Ensuring a clear and consistent brand across all practice areas, offices and communication channels.
• Developing brand guidelines, templates and creative assets to support firmwide adoption.
• Helping partners and teams confidently apply brand principles, tone of voice and visual standards.
Strategic Campaigns & Market Differentiation
• Working with the CMO, Growth & Business Development and Communications to shape and deliver brand campaigns aligned to firm strategy and sector priorities and translate growth ambitions s into clear, market-facing propositions.
• Developing and planning integrated brand and sector campaigns across digital and offline channels, in partnership with wider team
• Identifying opportunities to strengthen Thorntons’ differentiation in the legal and professional services market.
• Overseeing media planning and buying in collaboration with external agencies to ensure campaigns achieve maximum impact and reach.
Creative Leadership & Delivery
• Leading the internal Studio team to deliver high-quality, impactful creative work across firm initiatives.
• Managing relationships with external creative agencies and suppliers.
• Setting clear briefs, priorities and quality standards for all creative output.
• Ensuring effective planning and prioritisation across campaigns, projects and firmwide activity.
• Establishing clear KPIs and ensuring effective resource planning across the Brand & Creative function.
Pitches, Content & Client Engagement
• Supporting the Proposals & Tenders function through strong visual storytelling and pitch templates.
• Developing modular credentials content including case studies, sector expertise and lawyer profiles.
• Working with Communications and Growth & Business Development to translate legal insight into engaging thought leadership and campaign content.
• Supporting on legal directory and award submissions by ensuring clear, consistent and compelling brand messaging.
Brand Performance & Insight
• Defining and tracking brand metrics including awareness, differentiation and consistency.
• Producing reporting that demonstrates the contribution of brand activity to long-term growth.
• Using insight and data to refine strategy and strengthen brand equity.
• Ensuring brand performance indicators align with wider commercial KPIs and growth priorities.
Leadership & Collaboration
• Leading and developing a high-performing Brand & Marketing team.
• Building strong relationships with partners and colleagues across the firm.
• Promoting a culture of creativity, accountability and continuous improvement.
• Ensuring brand activity reflects the firm’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and responsible marketing.
What you’ll need
We’re looking for:
• Significant experience in a senior brand, marketing or creative leadership role—ideally within professional services.
• Demonstrable experience shaping and evolving brand and marketing strategy within a complex organisation.
• Strong creative judgement combined with commercial awareness and strategic thinking.
• Experience leading integrated campaigns across digital and offline channels.
• Proven ability to lead creative teams and manage external agencies.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to influence and collaborate with senior leaders and partners.
• Strong organisational and leadership capability, with experience managing multiple priorities and projects.
