Who We Are
Our Own® is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that complex challenges demand multifaceted solutions. We strive to foster access and bridge existing gaps in these critical areas, promoting inclusivity and opportunity for our communities.
About the Role
The Wellness Teacher is a curriculum delivery role. You will be in the classroom, teaching wellness across grade bands from transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade. You bring lessons to life with energy and intention, adapt your approach to meet the developmental needs of younger and older students, and help young people build the language and habits to take care of their physical, mental, and emotional health. This role is for educators who love teaching, know how to read a room, and want their work to mean something beyond a test score.
Key Responsibilities
Lesson Planning: Develop and prepare comprehensive wellness lesson plans aligned with the Our Own curriculum and state standards, covering physical fitness, nutrition, mental health, stress management, social-emotional learning, and substance abuse prevention.
Instructional Delivery: Teach engaging, interactive wellness classes across the TK-12 grade range, adapting strategies, language, and pacing to meet the developmental needs of each age group.
Classroom Management: Hold a focused, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where students feel safe to participate, ask questions, and try new things. Ability to manage classroom behaviors and maintain a focused learning environment of 20 to 30 students, including in the event that additional support staff are not available. Ability to effectively communicate and track student behaviors to leadership.
Individualized Support: Provide personalized guidance to students based on their wellness needs and goals, including small group interventions and warm referrals to school counselors or appropriate resources.
Collaboration with Schools: Work alongside classroom teachers, administrators, and counselors to integrate wellness into the broader school day and culture.
Professional Development: Stay current on trends, research, and best practices in wellness education through ongoing training, workshops, and team learning sessions.
