Our Energy and Environment Directorate plays a pivotal role, employing over 1,700 experts dedicated to supporting the Department of Energy (DOE). We strive to modernize the nation’s power grid, enhance renewable energy technologies, and tackle complex nuclear and environmental issues.

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division is at the forefront of transitioning to efficient energy systems through innovative research. We utilize expertise in power systems and advanced data analytics to stimulate market transformation and influence energy policy.

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate - AI Solutions for Building Energy Systems within our Building Simulation and Design Group (BS&DG). This integral role involves conducting research and implementing AI techniques to improve building energy efficiency. The candidate will be engaged with multi-disciplinary teams focused on enhancing building research and operational methodologies.

This position requires an onsite presence at our facility located in Portland, OR; Richland, WA; or Seattle, WA, with the possibility of hybrid arrangements based on laboratory policies and project needs.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct innovative research in AI for building energy systems, exploring generative AI, large language models, and agentic systems.
• Develop and implement cutting-edge AI methods to facilitate building research applications, including data preparation and technical evaluation.
• Create modeling workflows, tools, and prototypes that enhance building energy research under project leader guidance.
• Contribute to the production of technical analyses, research outputs, and foundational documents that inform decision-making in building projects.
• Engage in existing projects that incorporate established workflows and transition to AI-enhanced approaches.
• Execute high-quality work to meet defined project scopes and timelines while collaborating with project teams.
• Participate in proposal development through technical analysis and literature reviews.
• Support knowledge dissemination through publications and presentations related to research activities.
• Stay informed on relevant literature and methods in AI and building systems to facilitate professional growth.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
• PhD received within the past five years or expected within the next eight months from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD in architectural engineering, building science, mechanical engineering, or a related field with potential for independent research.
• Experience in building energy system analysis, including modeling and performance evaluation.
• Demonstrated proficiency in AI or machine learning applications within engineering or scientific research.
• Programming experience in Python or similar languages for modeling and data analysis.
• Track record of contributing to research projects and delivering quality results within project parameters.
• Experience in proposal preparation with technical insights and background research.
• Publication record or evidence of significant contributions from doctoral studies.
• Skill in effectively communicating research findings through presentations or scholarly articles.
