Job Description
As a Veterinary Assistant, your duties will include but may not be limited to assisting in medical treatment and procedures under the supervision and at the direction of the attending Veterinarian, keeping accurate medical records, client education, promotion of hospital products and services and support of the Doctors, practice manager and other team members. This position requires a practical knowledge of the hospital’s procedures, policies and services; client and patient treatment protocols; data transcribing; word processing and the standard procedures, records and terminology used in the veterinary hospital. Attention to personal, co-worker, and patient safety is paramount.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Must be friendly, outgoing, and “people oriented”
· Excellent communication skills. Bi-language is a plus
· Problem-solving skills
· Excellent customer service skills
· Telephone answering and computer skills are necessary
· Must be a team player willing to learn and to accept change
· Must have flexible availability to work day or night shifts and on weekends.
Essential Functions:
· Maintain cleanliness of hospital
· Ability to lift at least 45 pounds without assistance
· Bending, twisting, stretching, pushing, lifting, standing, pulling, reaching frequently throughout the day, 45 pounds without assistance
· administer SQ, IM and IV injections and oral medications and treatments
· Run in-house diagnostic tests and package blood and urine samples
· Take and assist in taking x-rays
· Monitor hospitalized and post-op patients
· Administer vaccines and be familiar with vaccine protocol
· Answer client questions over the phone
· Prepare patients for surgery and monitor anesthesia
· Keep animals, cages and hospital clean (including laundry, mopping, and trash duties)
· Administer medicated baths and dips
· Keep exam rooms and treatment room clean and stocked, and help receptionists put patients in rooms
· Obtain TPR’s and weight on patients
· Clean surgical instruments and prepare surgical packs
· Help rotate and put away new food deliveries
· Communicate with clients regarding post-vaccination and post-surgical care and instructions
· Record treatments and other medical information in computer system
· Follow all protocols determined by patient care coordinator
· Act as a client liaison throughout visit-ensure waiting times are kept to a minimum, ensure staff has attended to treatment requests and requests for information
· Communicate with staff and client to ensure workflow is completed
Other duties as assigned
Job Types: Part-time, Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $30.00 per hour
Experience:
Veterinary experience: 1 year (Preferred)
Veterinary assistant: 1 year (Preferred)
