You'll play a vital role in projects dedicated to the care and maintenance of Heritage and Visitor sites in the North Canterbury region covering Hanmer Springs, St James, Lake Sumner and Lewis Pass, with opportunities to support the wider team based out of Rangiora and Arthur’s Pass National Park at times. This position is based in Hanmer Springs, there is no DOC accommodation provided.
The Ranger position is a crucial operational role and forms part of a, close-knit team of seven permanent Heritage and Visitor staff reporting to the North Canterbury Office in Rangiora. In this role your day-to-day work will be primarily field based where you will be involved in:
maintenance and preservation of historic sites
maintenance of conservation campsites, picnic and car park areas, toilets and water supplies
assisting with the construction and maintenance of structures
back country track and hut maintenance
track construction and maintenance in high use front country areas
operating chainsaws, scrub-bars, backpack sprayers, diggers, and other minor earthwork machinery; training will be given
office work including data entry, planning, and organising field trips.
The role involves living and working in remote backcountry locations for up to 5 consecutive nights at a time, at least twice a month on average.

We are looking for a confident communicator who can work well in a team environment as well as alone. If you have any of the following attributes, or desire to learn the below skills, we are keen to hear from you:
Practical knowledge in general infrastructure maintenance, including basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks.
Experience using power equipment (e.g. chainsaws, scrub bars).
High level of physical fitness and demonstrated backcountry experience.
Confidence working independently and as part of a team
Strong health, safety, and wellbeing focus.
Tech-savvy, with experience using GPS, mobile apps, and digital tools.
Current full NZ driver’s licence (Class 1 or above).
