Junior Data Analyst – Energy & Sustainability

Overview

Starting in early June, you'll spend 8 weeks helping build something real: a publicly accessible retrofit payback calculator that shows Manitobans exactly what home energy improvements could mean for their wallet and their carbon footprint. You'll be supported by SBM staff and contribute to a growing suite of public resources, including SBM's Home Retrofit Guides, that help Manitobans take action on home energy use. There's also potential for a part-time extension after the placement for the right person.

Duties

Build and refine a retrofit payback calculator estimating upfront costs, rebates, annual energy savings, and long-term household savings
Gather and organize Manitoba-specific data on energy prices, typical retrofit costs, and equipment lifespans
Prepare clear assumption tables and plain-language explanations so any homeowner can understand the results
Create simple charts and a short user guide to accompany the calculator
Test SBM's existing Home Retrofit Guides for usability, readability, and mobile responsiveness, and summarize findings with practical recommendations
Requirements

Essential

Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee protection - aged 15 to 30 at the start of employment (Canada Summer Jobs requirement)
Enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program - statistics, data science, environmental studies, economics, or related field
Solid spreadsheet skills (Excel or Google Sheets) - you can build a formula, structure a dataset, and make it readable
Strong written communication - you can translate numbers into plain language a homeowner would understand
Assets (not required)

Familiarity with basic data visualization (charts, graphs, simple dashboards)
Experience with user testing, usability review, or plain-language writing
Knowledge of home energy systems, retrofits, or Manitoba's energy landscape
Any exposure to web publishing or simple online tools
