Job Description

Southern Institute of Technology

Permanent Full-Time
Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is proud to be launching its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) — a significant milestone for our Social Services Department and the wider Southland community. We are seeking a registered Social Worker to join us as a Tutor, contributing to the establishment and delivery of this new degree programme for the first time.

This is a rare opportunity to be involved at the ground level of a new professional programme, shaping curriculum delivery, supporting student development, and upholding the professional standards required for social work registration in Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the role

As a Social Worker Tutor, you will deliver high‑quality teaching and assessment within the Bachelor of Social Work, ensuring alignment with Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) standards, NZQA requirements, and SIT academic policies. You will play a key role in supporting students’ professional readiness, including fitness‑for‑practice decisions and progression toward registration as social workers.

This position sits within the Faculty of Health and Humanities and is based at SIT’s Invercargill campus.

Key responsibilities

Deliver and assess BSW teaching aligned to SWRB, NZQA and SIT requirements
Design, assess and moderate valid, fair assessments
Exercise professional judgement and gatekeeping responsibility for student fitness for practice
Contribute to programme development, review and continuous improvement
Embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice in teaching and student support
About you

Registered Social Worker (SWRB) with a current practising certificate (essential)
Recognised Social Work qualification with a Master’s degree (completed or in progress)
Sound knowledge of SWRB competence standards, codes of conduct and accreditation expectations
Demonstrated application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori in practice
Ability to make ethical, well‑documented decisions regarding student suitability and readiness for professional practice
Tertiary teaching or supervision experience is desirable but not required.
Why join SIT?

Be part of the inaugural delivery of SIT’s Bachelor of Social Work
Help shape the future of social work education in the Southland region
Work within a supportive, values‑driven academic environment
Enjoy lifestyle balance in a close‑knit community with strong professional connections
