Job Description
The back office is comprised of the areas that don't directly generate revenue for the business, butprovide vital support and administration. The back office in an investment bank might encompass departments like I.T., operations, HR, accounting and compliance.As a branch banker, your job duties includeproviding financial information to customers, selling insurance products, and developing client relationships. The career typically requires a bachelor's degree in banking, finance, or a related field and experience working in a financial institution.If by back office you mean non public facing personnel then some examples would be: underwriters, compliance officers, loan processors, deposit operations staff, payment systems operators, internal auditors, human resources, loan servicing departments, IT and information security personnel. The larger the bank, the larger the back office.
• Backend roles are the only route to Investment Management and Banking roles for even the top notch fresh talent in India! I can count the number of analyst roles in Mumbai offices of Investment Banks in India - and that are all the front end roles available to fresh graduates. Maybe 10.
• Backend roles pay well - generally far better than general banking/ corp fin careers.
• In terms of career path, i would say almost all backend guys transcend to other roles - client facing, corporate finance treasury within 35 years. So i will put it at par with a corporate finance/ treasury role, and far ahead of a banking (corporate or retail) role.
• Backend roles are sometimes your only entry point from India to markets like US, UK or even Singapore. I moved to Goldman, NY within 2 years of starting in Bangalore and more than 15 of my friends/ colleagues from my batch followed suit. Every single person has had a wonderful career path.
• Learning and exposure is slightly slower given you do not answer to or meet a client regularly but you get there.
