The J-1 Intern/Trainee programs primary purpose is a cultural exchange training opportunity to enhance the skills and expertise of the interns in their academic or occupational fields. Eligible participants in the Intern program are fulltime students or recent graduates who participate in a work-based learning environment of up to 12 months to develop practical skills that will enhance their future careers. Eligible participants in the Trainee program have either a degree or professional certificate from a post-secondary academic institution & at least one year of prior related work experience or five years of work experience. The training program that is provided is guided work-based training that will improve the participants knowledge of American techniques, methodologies, and technology. These programs offer a cultural experience that include meeting and training with local Americans, seeing local attractions and experiencing firsthand the typical activities in their local community
