Microbiology Technician

Roles and Responsibilities
• Collecting samples from patients for testing, including blood, sputum, or stool samples
• Cultivating bacteria in Petri dishes to grow cultures that can be used for identification purposes
• Preparing solutions and reagents needed for testing
• Preparing cultures for examination under a microscope by adding different nutrients or medications
• Preparing materials for the lab or clinic by setting up equipment and supplies for tests, experiments, and procedures
• Conducting tests on specimens to identify disease causing agents such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites
• Performing routine laboratory maintenance tasks such as sterilizing equipment and solutions using an autoclave.
• Monitoring cultures to determine when they are ready to be analyzed
• Communicating test results to physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals
