Job description
• Secure and prepare all supplies required for surgical intervention
• Ensure the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR
• Perform instrument counts prior to each procedure
• Prepare patient skin for surgical treatment
• Position and re-position patient during surgery
• Help monitor patients during surgery
• Provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase
• Perform scrub functions
• Collect and label specimens taken during a surgical procedure
• Follow all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures
• To provide nursing care in the Operating Department and as a skilled member of the Theatre team.
• To act as the scrubbed or circulating nurse during surgical procedures.
• Participating as a Scrubbed member of the Theatre team and carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments, and needles, in conjunction with a second nurse and reporting on the same to the surgeon.
• Acting as a circulating member of the Theatre team.
• Assisting other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of Theatres.
• Assisting in the compilation of the Theatre register. Labeling and dispatch of laboratory specimens to the recovery area. Providing assistance to the Anesthetic and Surgeon as required.
• Checking, witnessing, and administering controlled and scheduled drugs.
• Co-operating with appropriate Departmental and Ward staff in sending patients to the Operating Department.
• Advising senior nurse or Theatre manager of proposed changes in the order of the operating lists.
