Position Purpose: The Accountant I – Payroll will prepare payrolls for a variety of nonprofit organizations, assist the payroll manager in managing payroll timelines, training and compliance issues and perform routine bookkeeping and accounting for other non-profit clients.
Support Kansas City (SKC) is a nonprofit organization that enables other nonprofit organizations to focus on their missions by providing integrated expertise in financial management and other back office support in the greater Kansas City community.
Location and Culture: SKC is located in Merriam, KS. Staff currently has the option to work in a hybrid model of being in the office two to three days per week, and working remote the other days of the week. New employees will be trained in the office for the first +0 days.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Process biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly payrolls accurately and on time.
• Input and update employee payroll information in the payroll system.
• Verify and audit timekeeping records for compliance with established standards.
• Calculate and process payroll deductions, including taxes, benefits, and garnishments.
• Prepare and distribute payroll reports and statements.
• Provide accounting support services including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general journal entries, and management report preparation
• Assist other accounting staff with data entry and accounts payable
• Address and resolve employee inquiries regarding payroll issues and discrepancies.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
• Assist in the preparation and filing of payroll tax returns.
• Maintain payroll records and ensure data accuracy.
• Support payroll audits and implement process improvements as needed.
• Maintain a conscientious attitude with careful attention to detail
• Manage client relationships and provide exceptional customer service and support
• Interface with other SKC staff members to maximize efficiency in meeting client needs and deadlines
• Work on projects independently but not autonomously
• Maintain confidentiality of client information

Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of payroll processing experience.
• Familiarity with payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex, Gusto).
• Basic knowledge of payroll laws and regulations.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines
• Proficient knowledge of standard accounting practices and bookkeeping
• Proficient knowledge of Outlook, MS Word, Power Point and Excel
• Demonstrated high level customer/client service and response
• Maintains Confidentiality
• Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien
• Pass all background checks
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $40,000.00 - $47,000.00 per year
