Job Description

Making a difference - it's what you do. But what about what you need? why not make a difference, somewhere different?

Further your career as a Registered Nurse in New Zealand’s mental health and addiction sector.

About Health New Zealand and our NGOs

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the government organisation that runs the health system in Aotearoa New Zealand. We deliver hospital and specialist services across the country and fund non-government organisations (NGOs) to deliver primary health, wellbeing and community-based specialist services.

We’re the largest single employer of people delivering mental health and addiction services in New Zealand, including within community mental health and addiction teams with children and young people, older persons and a range of inpatient services. We also provide specialist consultation and liaison services to emergency departments, NGOs, general practices and primary health organisations.

NGOs and community providers are invaluable to our local communities, seeing around 40 per cent of all people seeking mental health and addiction support. Many receive government funding from Health New Zealand, delivering crucial peer/lived experience-led and specific Māori and Pacific cultural services in our communities. NGOs provide community health and well-being support, primary level mental health and addiction services or specialist services including children and young people, community crisis respite and residential.

About the opportunity

We’re looking for Registered Nurses with mental health experience to work in a variety of areas and health settings, including our acute adult inpatient units, high/complex needs, forensics, child and youth services, learning and disabilities, community teams, or with family and lived experience-led services.

We have opportunities across New Zealand from our main cities to our smaller rural locations. All with access to our renowned great outdoor activities and spectacular scenery.

Helping you make the move

Registered Nurses are on Tier 1 of New Zealand's Green List which means they are eligible for the Straight to Residence Visa and can apply for New Zealand residency before they arrive, provided they have a job offer from a New Zealand-accredited employer in a role that meets the median wage requirements, and you hold occupational registration. This can either be us at Health New Zealand or an NGO or community provider that we can put you in contact with, based on your job preferences.

Our Candidate Support Team provides one-to-one personalised support throughout your journey to your new home in New Zealand, which includes:
• Help with visas and immigration
• Matching you to an area of the country that best meets your preferences
• Relocation and settlement support for roles offered by Health NZ.

What you need to work in New Zealand

To work as a Registered Nurse in our mental health and addiction sector, you must be eligible for Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and have a scope of practice to work in mental health, therefore mental health experience is essential. Our team can help get you started with the registration process.

At Health New Zealand we’re committed to growing New Zealand’s health workforce. We’re working with mental health and addiction NGOs and community providers to build a diverse and inclusive workforce and improve health outcomes for all people.
