Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs standard laboratory tasks according to professional regulations and hospital procedures, and coordinates activities to allow quality work in a timely manner. Responsibilities include loading and unloading lab specimens from automated and non-automated instrumentation, performing various low to moderate-complexity testing including waived testing, assisting in problem requisitions/specimens, accessing, entering and executing lab orders in the appropriate medical record(s), and maintaining an environment that promotes physical safety for all patients, team members, and visitors.

Other Key Duties / Responsibilities

Follows established laboratory and testing procedures to perform routine and special tests on biological and environmental materials using automated equipment or manual methods. Performs tests accurately and cost-effectively.

Collects and/or assists with collection of patient specimens, and evaluates specimen acceptability. Calculates test findings required by each test and accurately reports results. Recognizes critical values and abnormal results and notifies appropriate personnel. Prepares specimens for transportation to other clinical laboratories for testing as needed.

Performs quality control and maintains laboratory equipment and supplies through troubleshooting and use of preventive maintenance procedures. Evaluates accuracy of test results and proper functioning of instruments and reagents and maintains proper quality control records including documenting corrective action for the hospitals quality control program. Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs, including calling a service representative or technical hotline as necessary.

Orders reagents, supplies and instrument consumables in a timely manner to ensure continuous service. Coordinates services and resources with laboratory and non-laboratory personnel (e.g., unlabeled/ mislabeled specimens, supplies), stocks area for next shift and alerts appropriate personnel when reagents or supplies are low. Receives, labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner.

Handles inquiries regarding procedures, test results and their interpretation. Communicates test results appropriately, accurately and in a timely manner, and documents communication as required.

Maintains a working knowledge of laboratory and other hospital computer functions to ensure accurate data management, including charges and credits.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills / Abilities

Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize effectively.

Ability to produce precise and accurate results in a timely manner.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

Proficient with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience

Associates Degree and Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Certification required; certification requiring educational maintenance by the certifying agency must be kept current and valid.

Bachelors Degree and Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) Certification preferred.

Minimum 2 Years Experience In a Similar Role Required.

Proven success in maintaining and continuously improving laboratory processes and procedures in a hospital and/or emergency room setting preferred.

Physical Requirements

Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

Frequent keyboard use/data entry.

Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping.
