The modern Māori Land Court and Māori Appellate Court are enduring courts of record which are continued under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1++3.

This legislative framework recognises that whenua is a taonga tuku iho of special significance to Māori, and for that reason, the primary objective of both Courts is to promote, and assist in, the retention of Māori land in the hands of its owners, and for the effective use, management and development of their land.

The Ministry of Justice supports this framework by providing client advisory, court registry, case management, land, title and survey management as well as judicial support services for both the Māori Land Court and the Māori Appellate Court.
