Job Description

The Senior Infection Prevention and Control Nurse with the Infection Prevention and Control Matron is responsible for providing a specialist lead to ensure high standards of infection prevention and control practice, to achieve compliance with The Health and Social Care Act (2008): Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections. The post holder is responsible for contributing to the provision of specialist clinical operational leadership to the infection prevention and control service, with the aim of maintaining and developing the quality of organisation wide clinical infection prevention and control. Undertaken through the planning, co-ordinating, delivering as well as contributing to the development and evaluation of operational activity. Ensuring excellent communication channels at all levels of the organisation and completing work within deadlines. The post holder will work flexibly at all hospital and external locations. The Senior Infection Prevention and Control Nurse will work independently with minimal supervision, with the ability to make timely decisions and problem solve

Provide expert knowledge and advice on all aspects of infection prevention and control (IPC) ensuring maintenance of clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice

Play a key role in the continuous development of IPC performance.

The post holder will be required to have a visible presence in promoting best practice across clinical and non-clinical environments in order to prevent and minimise the risk of healthcare associated infections.

Participate in setting objectives in relation to the managed reduction of rates and numbers of healthcare-associated infection.

Contribute to the monitoring of rates and types of infection within the Trust. This requires collating and analysing infection surveillance and audit data.

The post holder would be expected to supervise, develop and identify the learning needs of the Infection Prevention & Control Champions in liaison with the IPC Matron.

Participate in the provision of a clinical programme of education and training in all aspects of infection prevention and control.

Participate in maintaining effective communication networks and collaborative working relationships with key personnel, e.g. Matrons, Ward Managers, Microbiology, Estates and Facilities and Occupational Health etc.

Contribute to the continued co-ordination of the infection prevention and control service by deputising in the absence of the Infection Prevention and Control Matron.
