Important Information: Hours of work are rotating days and evenings with weekend rotation. Operating 24/7, the DSC Pre/Post Analytics department in the Southern Alberta Hub Lab plays a key role in the delivery of customer-focused laboratory services & is vital to the operation of the laboratory. As a team member in this fast-paced and physically demanding environment, you will utilize skills in specimen distribution & processing, data entry, communication, customer service, and teamwork to meet operational requirements. Functions, responsibilities, and requirements of this position include abiding by the APL Values, Kindness, Inclusion, Innovation, Agility and Accuracy. Accurate transcription of patient demographics and tests into the LIS, including labelling specimens and requisitions. Receiving, processing, and sorting patient specimens and requisitions. Maintaining laboratory equipment. Preparing specimens for transfer/referral. Answering telephone inquiries. Provide high quality service to clients APL in an effective, efficient, and safe manner. Ability to listen, comprehend and respond to or relay information, directions, or questions in person, over the phone, or in writing in an accurate and concise manner. Other clerical duties as required. Assisting with the training of staff and students. Receptive, adaptable, and flexible within an environment of change and interruptions. Other Information: As workload demands and operational requirements shift, the location, dates and/or hours of work may be changed. High endurance for standing and the ability to frequently push/pull a rolling cart weighing up to 200 lbs. Repetitive lifting of specimen transport containers weighing up to 40 lbs. is required.

Description:
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience in a Medical Laboratory of significant size and complexity within the last 2 years. Basic computer knowledge with proficiency in data entry into Epic-Beaker. Intermediate competency in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with materials distribution (up to 40lbs) including lifting and maneuvering rolling carts (up to 200lbs). Capable of standing/walking for prolonged periods of time with manual dexterity and high levels of attention to detail. Analytical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Adaptable/flexible in an environment of change and interruptions. Ability to give/receive feedback. Courses in leadership, AHS Improvement Way (AIW), LEAN, PROSCI Change Management are assets.
