The successful candidate will provide support to the University of Alberta Hospital Toxicology/Trace Elements laboratory by receiving, organizing and distributing specimens for laboratory testing and investigation. The Laboratory Assistant I – Toxicology position is required to perform primary manipulation and other specific related procedures on specimens as set out in the Laboratory Procedures Manual. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for programming technical instruments, performing quality control procedures and minor equipment maintenance, preparing specimens for storage or for transport to other facilities, and filing, retrieving and disposing of clinical samples. The position organizes workflow and may be required to work independently on weekend and evening shifts. The incumbent contacts nursing stations, physicians, clinics and other hospitals and health care facilities regarding specimens. Collections of clinical water samples for quality control testing, pipette calibration verification, inventory management, document storage and retrieval, and reagent preparation will be a component of this position. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:
The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve these is required. Must have the ability to operate Windows based computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Toxicology and Trace Elements is strongly preferred. Experience in a Chemistry laboratory is preferred. Knowledge of the Epic Beaker laboratory information system is preferred. Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry is preferred. Experience in inventory control, equipment maintenance and specimen handling are preferred.
