He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland's coast, rivers, streams, lakes and groundwater are an integral part of what Aucklanders value in our region. Play a pivotal role in helping sustainably manage our water resources for future generations!

We have a fixed term opportunity until September 2026 for a Lead Water Scientist to join our Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit. Provide scientific leadership across the council group, inputting into major strategic, policy and operational programmes and projects.

Ensure research, advice and reporting delivered by the unit is of the highest quality, and embed innovation and excellence in all that you do.

This is a great opportunity for a highly experienced water scientist to ensure that decisions on the management of water resources in Tāmaki Makaurau are based on robust evidence.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You have ideally completed a PhD or have equivalent experience in water resource management, specifically relating to water quality.

Your skills and experience include:

exceptional collaboration skills
ability to provide technical leadership and mentoring
data analysis, scientific reporting and communication
familiarity with New Zealand's regulatory framework for water management within a local government context

We will also value your extensive network of contacts in water science.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

Auckland Council is the largest territorial authority in Australasia providing essential services and facilities to more than 1.6 million people. You will be part of our engaged and supportive environment teams, a collective of highly skilled professionals responsible for long-term environmental monitoring, research and providing technical advice across council.

In addition to our employee benefits, we work flexibly and provide opportunities for professional development. You will also enjoy further developing and expanding your networks as we often collaborate with other management agencies and research institutes.

Apply now - together we can create an Auckland we can all be proud of.
