About the position
Ministerial staff form an integral part of Government, providing indispensable political, policy and administrative support to Ministers as they carry out their executive responsibilities. They work in conjunction with the apolitical Australian Public Service to deliver the Government’s agenda.
The Media Adviser will be responsible for providing high-quality strategic media and communications advice to support the Minister in promoting the policies, initiatives and administration of the Social Services portfolio. In collaboration with the Press Secretary, the Media Adviser liaises with media outlets, will draft speeches, messages, talking points, and other communications materials on behalf of the Minister.
The Media Adviser will work closely with policy advisers to help shape communications materials along with the Social Media Adviser to craft the products across social media platforms.
Like all staffing roles the Media Adviser will need to show flexibility and adaptability to best perform their duties while in the role.
The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:
Prepare and provide timely, high-quality written material including media releases, information packages, and messages, as well as communications material required to support the Minister in Parliament and Question Time.
Maintain effective relationships with the Press Gallery and other journalists in relation to the Minister’s announcements and policy agenda, and the agenda of the Government more generally.
Build and maintain effective relationships with other internal and external stakeholders including key organisations, Departments, the Prime Minister’s Office, other Ministerial Offices and other Parliamentary offices.
Monitor news media, press conferences and social media platforms for visibility of stories and themes, ensuring the Minister is appropriately briefed on emerging matters of public interest.
Support the Press Secretary and collaborate with other advisers in the Minister’s office on the Minister’s public-facing engagements.
Plan and manage media events.
Perform other duties as required by the Minister.
Regular interstate and Canberra travel will be required for this role, as is reasonable additional work outside of business hours, particularly during Parliamentary sitting periods (compensated by an allowance outlined below).
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:
Prior experience working in political or related portfolio media role; or prior experience working in journalism or media.
Strong written and verbal communications skills.
Firm understanding of the Australian media and communications environment.
Sound knowledge of the Australian parliamentary and political system.
Ability to build and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience providing advice on a wide range of complex policy, public affairs, parliamentary, political and media matters.
Experience in planning, organising and implementing communication strategies and high-profile media announcements.
Ability to manage and prioritise complex priorities under tight deadlines while exercising a high level of analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience in working in a high-pressure environment as part of a team.
Demonstrated professional integrity, ability to exercise leadership and judgement, and understanding of the need to maintain strict professional confidentiality.
Ability to rapidly acquire a sound knowledge of the structure and functions of the portfolio.
Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Employment conditions:
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1+84 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23, noting a new Enterprise Agreement has been agreed to and is expected to take effect shortly. Current conditions include:
A commencing salary between $101,701 and $150,086 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
An additional Personal Staff Allowance of $31,702 is payable in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check. Applicants are required to obtain and maintain security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 2 and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
