Job Summary

Working under the general direction of the Senior Mentor/FASD Educator, the Mentor is responsible for providing a broad range of promotion, outreach, intervention and treatment services and supports, that focus on intervention and health preservation for both high-risk women and women with difficult life circumstances, including their families, in the areas of substance abuse / misuse and fetal alcohol awareness and prevention in order to promote the adoption of healthier lifestyles and living. The Mentor shall ensure that all activities are undertaken in a manner that is consistent with, and complementary to, the Vision Statement, the Principles and Values and the policies and procedures of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre of Winnipeg Inc.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reviews intake assessment instruments and techniques completed by Senior Mentor/FASD Educator for the purpose of providing awareness of, and connection to the FAS/E program, and to develop a trusting, respectful relationship with the constituent(s).
Coordinates home visitation and community support activities designed to maintain a level of contact and service delivery matching the identified needs of the constituent(s) and, where required and appropriate, provides a broad range of crisis support and intervention activities.
Provides counseling and support to program participant(s) with emphasis on establishing individual goals, objectives and monitoring points within the program.
Engages in an ongoing process of monitoring progress, providing constructive feedback and necessary interventions which utilizes an appropriate combination of traditional methods and values partnered with access to contemporary physical, emotional and psychological services.
Maintains an awareness of agencies, programs and supports providing community and culturally based health, wellness and lifestyle supports relative to the FAS/E Program, and ensures an effective integration and delivery of services to constituent(s).
Facilitates, and provides support to, individual and group activities such as personal counseling sessions, Sharing Circles, Sweats and Retreats which are designed to provide a base of personal knowledge and reference to constituents through individual and shared interactions and discussions.
Maintains a thorough and accurate record of all constituent contacts, personal visits and appointments, agency referrals and document progress towards achieving the goal(s) and objective(s) established collaboratively with each Constituent.
Provides information regarding the mandate of the FAS/E Program, associated services provided in support of that mandate, and other Centre programs applicable to current and prospective Constituents.
Acts as an advocate with other agencies, organizations and individuals for the purpose of addressing immediate needs, while constantly encouraging and supporting personal empowerment, independence and self-reliance, for current constituents,
Adheres to the definition of, and reporting procedures for, suspected instances of child abuse as set forth in the Child and Family Services Act.
QUALIFICATIONS

Baccalaureate degree in Social Work or a BA in Social Sciences with a principal emphasis on counseling services, or a combination of education, such as an Applied Counseling Certificate and / or counseling courses through Red River College combined with directly related experience deemed equivalent by the Centre.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in dealing with the prenatal substance abuse / misuse issues utilizing a multi-discipline intervention and treatment approach.
Previous practical experience in working within an Aboriginal-based community services providing physical, emotional, spiritual and social support to individuals and families.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including a demonstrated proficiency in conducting individual / group counseling, leading group presentations and group facilitation and effectively dealing with situations of conflict and stress.
Possess a current Province of Manitoba Driver’s Licence and a suitable vehicle for work-related transportation.
Practical experience in the operation of a personal computer, including the use of word processing software and spreadsheet applications and other general office equipment.
Demonstrated experience and ability to perform independent fieldwork with primary emphasis on the development and maintenance of effective direct constituent relations and maintaining accurate case records.
Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently within a fast-paced, high stress environment.
Ability to communicate in an Aboriginal language(s) would be a definite asset.
Demonstrated capacity to function effectively in a working team environment.
