Leidos is on the lookout for a talented Mid-level Software Engineer (C++) to join our innovative team!

Leidos operates the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL), a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) R&D facility aimed at improving transportation system operations in line with USDOT's goals of safety, mobility, sustainability, and equity. Engage in a variety of cutting-edge R&D projects involving next-gen technologies, including infrastructure and vehicle connectivity, automation, comprehensive simulation, and AI/ML modeling.
Location: This position requires full-time work at the customer site in McLean, VA.
Candidates MUST:
• All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be eligible for a Public Trust Clearance, which requires THREE (3) consecutive years in the United States WITHIN THE LAST FIVE (5) years.
Primary Responsibilities
• Lead the development of research prototypes and proof-of-concepts for various intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications encompassing vehicles, infrastructure, and cloud systems.
• Engage in and help shape our open-source software process, by triaging and addressing issues reported by users and evaluating external code contributions.
• Identify, document, and strategize to manage areas of technical debt.
• Conduct hands-on testing events and demonstrations on-site at the Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center and at external test facilities.
• Assess our team's current ITS software systems, understanding their architecture for potential redesigns into more modular, scalable, and maintainable components.
• Contribute to the establishment of internal best practices for software development and promote knowledge sharing to support team-wide adoption.
• Collaborate with a cross-functional team to evaluate the technical feasibility of projects, break down project goals into software development tasks, and assist in estimating overall effort and timelines.
• Steer the execution of technical work, including design efforts, addressing unforeseen technical challenges, and adapting to changes in customer needs.
• Interact directly with customer representatives and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication across technical disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
Minimum Qualifications
• A Bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering, with at least 4 years of professional experience in C++ software development, or a Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years of C++ development experience.
• Experience using CMake for building C++ packages.
• Familiarity with Git.
• Experience with Docker (including docker-compose).
• Software development experience in Java and/or Python.
• Experience working within an Agile framework utilizing tools like JIRA and Confluence.
• Proficiency in software quality techniques and practices, including automated unit testing, test-driven design, CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, and static code analysis tools.
• Understanding of mathematical concepts such as geometry, linear algebra, probability, graph theory, set theory, and statistics.
Preferred Qualifications
• Extensive experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining C++ software packages within a Linux environment.
• Experience with Linux build systems and package management.
• Software development experience with Java and/or Python.
• Experience with Kafka or comparable message broker systems.
• Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS).
• Experience in UI and/or front-end development.
• Familiarity with distributed computing and cloud computing concepts.
• Understanding of robotics concepts such as localization, path planning, perception, or sensor fusion.
• Familiarity with simulation environments like SUMO or CARLA, or other simulators developed in Unreal or Unity.
• Knowledge of existing CDA infrastructure standards and/or hardware, such as those from SAE or IEEE.
• Prior experience in a fast-paced, dynamic R&D setting.
• Experience in a leadership role within software engineering teams.
Anticipated salary range for this role is $95,000-$100,000

Pay Range: $69,550.00 - $125,725.00
The Leidos pay range for this job level serves as a general guideline and is not a guarantee of salary. Several factors will be considered in extending an offer, including job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, and internal equity.
