Full job description
Discover the Uniqueness of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) in New Zealand
Are you a passionate Obstetrician and Gynaecologist looking for a rewarding career with a difference? New Zealand offers a unique and fulfilling opportunity to practice in a healthcare system that values work-life balance, cultural sensitivity, and patient-centred care.

Why Choose O&G in New Zealand?

Midwife-Led Care with Specialist Support: New Zealand's maternity care system emphasises a collaborative approach, with midwives leading low-risk pregnancies and Obstetricians providing specialist care for high-risk or complex cases. This model supports natural, patient-centred birth experiences, allowing specialists to focus on critical cases where their expertise is needed most.
Publicly Funded Maternity Care: Maternity services are government-funded, ensuring that everyone in New Zealand can receive comprehensive prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. Obstetricians handle high-risk pregnancies, surgical interventions, and more, in a system designed to support both the patient.
Cultural Sensitivity and Equity in Care: New Zealand places a strong emphasis on providing equitable healthcare, particularly for Māori and Pacific populations. O&G specialists work within a system that integrates Māori health practices and respects Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi), offering culturally appropriate care and addressing disparities in maternal and gynaecological health outcomes.
Opportunity to Work in Rural Areas: While most healthcare services are concentrated in urban centres, rural New Zealand offers O&G specialists the chance to make a real impact. Working in a rural community provides you a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in a community delivering meaningful and impactful work where patients really need you.
Additionally, telehealth services help bridge gaps in remote locations, enabling better access to specialist care.

Focus on Natural Birth: New Zealand's healthcare system promotes natural, low-intervention childbirth, encouraging home births and the use of primary birthing units when safe. This contrasts with other countries where medical intervention is more common, offering a holistic approach to maternity care.
Benefits of Working in New Zealand

Work-Life Balance: Structured shifts and manageable workloads ensure you have time to enjoy life outside of work. You can provide your family with outdoor activities and adventures – and best of all, time to enjoy dinner every night together.
Funded Professional Development: Funded opportunities for continuing education through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), including international conferences and ongoing training.
Publicly Funded Healthcare: Focus on patient care without financial pressures or risk which are relevant in our countries such as the USA.
Cultural Impact: Make a significant difference in the healthcare outcomes of Māori and Pacific communities.
Make New Zealand Home: International candidates are provided with Immigration assistance.
Salary and Incentives

Salary Range: NZD 151,000 to NZD 250,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
Additional: Up to a third of your salary is available through on-call pay, overtime, and professional development allowances. While our salaries in New Zealand are not as high as other international countries, the hours you work, the quality of work-life balance will provide you with an ideal lifestyle for you and your family.
Skills and Qualifications

Clinical Expertise: Strong experience in managing pregnancy, childbirth, and gynaecological conditions.
Cultural Competency: Understanding of New Zealand's diverse cultural landscape, including the healthcare needs of Māori and Pacific women.
Advanced Training: Fellowship with RANZCOG or equivalent qualification and registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
