The Opportunity
As the Payroll Manager you will work in partnership with the Sr. Manager, People, to develop, enhance, facilitate and execute People programs related payroll, benefits, and total rewards. Location: This can be either hybrid from MEC's Home Office in Vancouver or remote within Canada.
As the Payroll Manager, you'll be:
Oversee MEC’s Payroll team providing strong leadership and mentorship to continue growing the skills and abilities of team members.
Leverage ADP software and other People systems, including Citation Canada (HRDownloads), HR ticketing system, and Thinkific. Recommend enhancements or improvements to systems/processes.
Ensure the Payroll team completes a timely submission of biweekly payroll so our MEC staffers are paid the correct amount on time.
Work with the Payroll team to ensure compliance with provincial ESA and all statutory requirements, including Worksafe requirements.
Work with Finance to support month-end, year-end, GL and journal entries. Continue to train/delegate these responsibilities to your Payroll team.
Partner with our People Business Management team to support their work through the hiring and termination process.
Support business leaders and key stakeholders by providing regular reporting and guidance to ensure policies and programs are being followed and new policies/programs are rolled out effectively.
Work with the People Systems Manager and Payroll & Benefits Specialist to liaise and be the point person with MEC’s benefit consultants.
Regularly review our benefit programs for market competitiveness and share recommendations on changes or new options to the Sr. Manager, People.
Work in partnership with the Sr. Manager, People, to complete the annual processes including benefit renewals and payroll year-end.
Find efficiencies within our People systems and recommend/implement new ways to improve the employee experience.
With the opening of new MEC locations, be proactive in researching ESA requirements in any new provinces, along with existing provinces. Oversee the set-up of new locations from a People systems, benefits, and payroll perspective.
Review CBAs to maintain compliance with our policies, payroll and benefits.
Partner with Sr. Manager, People and VP, People to support the annual pay review process including merit increases and market adjustments.
Other duties as assigned by the Sr. Manager, People, and/or the VP, People.
Qualifications
Hold an active Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation from the Canadian Payroll Association. CPHR designation also considered an asset.
Degree/diploma/certificate with a focus on finance, accounting, payroll and/or human resources
5-8 years of progressively advanced experience in payroll and benefits
3+ years of management experience, ideally within a People department.
Experience processing payroll in BC, AB, MB, ON, QC, NB & NS is an asset.
The ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, at the same time, while keeping your cool.
Great communication skills – you listen first, then share knowledge. Excellent speaking and writing skills.
A hard-working attitude. You deliver on what you commit to do.
Savviness with Windows, Excel (advanced knowledge), Outlook and other MS Office programs.
Experience with ADP software.
Experience working in unionized environments.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of ESA across the various provinces in which MEC operates.
Bilingual (EN & FR) is an asset.
The Compensation & Perks
This is an permanent role with an anticipated annual base salary range of $8+,500 to $112,200. The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant skills, experience, location, qualifications and internal equity. This role is eligible for our annual variable incentive plan.
